Nice initial review. Keep them coming!!! Also, we all enjoy pics :D

What is the major difference between the 5X25 and the 101E (5083E) that makes the E series cab more economical?

A few of the cab (I apologize for the quality as they are taken with my phone):
They should be in the following order. First a picture of the front controls. Second, will be the right hand controls and the third is a closeup of the remote lever and the rockshaft position lever to show how close they are (one of my complaints above). Fourth is the left hand controls which are only the MFWD and the PTO. Fifth, sixth and seventh are of the upper controls for the radio and AC. These are on the upper right of the cab. Last one is of my 2 year old lab Benelli. Just to show you how much room is in this cab. Benelli is about 85# and I'm 220#. We both fit comfortably and he loves it.

Trook,

I'm not positive as I've never used a 5x25 series, but doing a little research on the JD website, it looks to be mainly standard features. Comparing the 5625 (99hp) and the 5101 (101hp), the 5101 comes standard with the 12f/12r Powreverser where it is an option on the 5625 (standard is a 9f/3r syncshuttle). The economy PTO setting is optional on the 5625 and standard on the 5101. Looks like the 5625 has three mid remotes available where only two are available on the 5101. 5625 comes standard with two forward facing lights, the 5101 has two forward and two behind. 5625 comes standard with a dry clutch, vs the wet on the 5E series.

I have no idea what the price difference between the two are. Although the 5101 comes with more standard features, they are all optional on the 5625, so technically, you could build very similar tractors. I guess cost would be the difference at that point, if there is a difference in cost.

Nice ride. I bet Benelli really likes the A/C & Stereo on a hot dusty day.

What truck and trailer combo would it require to transport your rig with loader?? How long of a trailer??

KB9UDE,

You can move that tractor on a 12,000 lb 20 ft trailer. A typical 12,000 lb trailer weighs about 2500 lbs, so your payload is 9,500. You can pull this with a well equipped 3/4 ton pickup.

A better way to go would be a 14,000 lb trailer with an 11,000 lb payload which would help with transporting an extra implement. A 1 ton pickup would be a good match.

In the mountains with steep grades and hills I use a Ford 550 with 33,000 lb towing package and a class V hitch. I pull a 20 ft Big Tex 12PI which is rated for 12,000 lbs. The truck and trailer both weigh about 11,000 lbs. each so I am operating at about 66% of the towing capacity. If I had it to do over again I would have bought the 14PI which weighs about 275 lbs more but adds about 1725 lbs of payload. The cost difference is minimal too, maybe an extra $400-500.

Thanks Steve

I have a 14k 20ft trailer now and a 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy. I have been looking at 1 tons and a gooseneck but wondered if I could use my existing rig for now.

Tractor data lists the tractor as weighing 7320 pounds. I can't find the weight of the loader listed anywhere, but I would estimate 1000 pounds. On my machine, both rear tires are filled with antifreeze. Again, I have no idea how much weight that adds, but I've heard someone else guess 1000 pounds per tire. That sounds high to me, but it is possible. That leaves the tractor weighing 10320 pounds without any attachment on the rear. I have a tandam dually axle gooseneck rated at 20,000 but I drive a 2005 Chevy 2500 HD. My limit for that truck is about 12,000. The trailer weighs 4500, so that is a little more than I'm willing to put behind my truck.

Depending on the weight of your trailer, it might be possible to pull with your truck. I'll be going back to a dually for my next truck just because of this tractor. Luckily, though, my dealer is only 8 miles away, so if it needs to go in, I can just drive it there. It hasn't had to go in yet and I only use it around my land.

Everything can get bigger and bigger, before you know it you need an 18 wheeler to haul it. One problem with goosenecks is their own weight, 4500 lbs for a 20k and closer to 5500 lbs or more for a 24' floor and 25k trailer. The total rig gets to be very heavy and legally is too much weight for a 1 ton truck too.

A practical solution for moving a 5083E that KB9UDE is considering is a little less ballast. I would also consider using a flatbed truck so that you could carry an implement on it instead of the trailer, some weight transfer over the drive wheels would be a good thing. Far cheaper to throw a flatbed body on a 1 ton cab and chassis truck than to buy a gooseneck. Here is one of my trucks, it is an F350 I built a few years ago with two large rollaways but these could be deleted to carry large implements. It is the only truck I have that is setup for goosenecks since in later years I find the class 5 hitch seems to work out to be more efficient.
