Can you drive your tractor on the street?

I have been through the middle of town on a 5020JD pulling a 15' wide disc harrow. And this was before I had my license.
I drive my 50hp Mahindra to the local feed store (inside city limits) to pick up equipment quite regularly. Latest adventure was bringing a 20' wide 3pt drill/planter home behind our 4320JD. Glad I didn't meet anyone on our county road as I was stretched from ditch to ditch. It was wide enough I had to "weave" around mailboxes.
I was even hit by a 3 wheeler once on our county road when I was about 14. DPS showed up and wrote the guy a ticket for having an ATV on a public road (of course, he (3wheeler pilot) was drunk also). Same DPS officer took my statement and told me to go home.

I don't know what the rules are around here but I must spend 10 minutes a week waiting for a chance to pass some local farmer out on the road moving from one place to another. The only thing more common on the roads here than farm tractors are construction tractors. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The farmer that works my land drives his 350 HP NH monster on one of our local 4 lanes 55 mph highways! I asked him yesterday (as a result of this thread) how he gets his tractor and implement from his farm (9 miles away) to my land. Simply drives it on the highway. As big as his rig is, he says some folks still seem surprised, like they did not see him. As this tractor is HUGE!

I think it might depend on if tractor is on street for farm business or some other reason. Driving from farm to farm as business might give some kind of protection. However, if on a construction job or going to neighbors to cut grass, might be different rules. In any event, call the states or locals for info before running on road. Ya know, many are sue happy today.

Being from a mostly rural state, I've always taken it for granted that tractors can run the roads with relatively little attention here. Of course, we must stay off interstates, but everything else is fair game.

A few weeks back, I was moving hay for my son. I pulled out on to a main road with the tractor. One of our local police officers pulled up behind me and flipped his overhead lights on. I pulled over, thinking he was about to cite me for something I did. His explaination? "I was just giving you an escort so some of these "city slickers" didn't run over you".

That's the sort of attitude that keeps me here in the middle of the Bluegrass State.

The general liability portion of my farm insurance covers anything that might happen while on the road.

My little Kubota BX has a top speed of 8mph. I have the flashers and slow moving vehicle triangle. I called the local police the other day to ask if I could drive the tractor all the way across town on city streets and bikeways - 8 miles. They said OK!

After reviewing the route I would have to take I thought better of it and trailered it instead. There were several points where I couldn't avoid driving in the same lane with busy 4-lane 45mph traffic.

I'd have done it for just that reason. But then again, I have a tendancy to enjoy watching other drivers get frustrated...
