1991 Case International 485, 2014 New Holland T7.210 PC
Hi,

I own a case international 485 and can't seem to shift using the clutch while moving even the slightest bit or it will grind. I don't think it is a synchro and I want to know if I can double clutch it and not screw up the tractor?

Standard tractor operating procedure is to fully stop before making clutch-and-gear, gear changes.

Yeah I know that your technically mean't to fully stop but what if I'm hauling a full trailer. I don't want to start in Hi4 or the tractor would probably stall.

Are you double clutching?

No mate thats what I was trying to ask. Can I double clutch without screwing up the tranny or anything else?

It can be done, it will be difficult, and it will grind a bit till the rpm and ground speed match exactly

#1 this is not a recommended procedure and not approved of by the manufactures,

a) you will need to know what your rpm's are for a given road speed for each gear you are considering trying to shift to while moving,
example; hi 3 at 2200 rpm is the same road speed as hi 4 at 1600 rpm
b) with your tractor at speed in 3rd clutch in, shift to N,
c) engage the clutch in N, reduce the engine rpm's to match the road speed in 4th,
d) depress the clutch,
e) gently try to engage 4th,
it most likely will still grind as everything has to be perfect,
f) when successful engage the clutch
this can be accomplished on level ground or a slight down grade with lots of practice, it is not recommended, it is even more difficult going up a grade,
and if attempted on much of a down grade can result in a runaway.
Also this can be modified to only depressing the clutch to shift to N then engaging the clutch and fishing for a gear as it will engage when engine and road speed match
without using the clutch,
again not recommended.

I have a 484. Can shift on the fly w/ no difficulty. Two ranges, 4 speeds in each range. Both 484 and 485 have syncromesh transmissions. Jeffy, your advice in this matter lacks a credible element : experience.

Hayesy, clutch may require adjustment? Possibly replacement?
