I would go with the heavier oil if it were mine. If it smokes on start up that usually means worn valve seals or guides. Did you try oil in the cylinders for a compression test as mentioned earlier by many?

Hello Jim sorry I did not do the oil test. I was so happy to see 145 when it was warmed up i was satisfied and decided not to mess with it anymore. I recently changed the oil but next oil change i think i will go heavier. Your saying 15/40 is heavier oil? the 15 means what again? 15 when below feezing? Will this tractor be unhappy in any way with 15/40 since it has had 30 weight in it all of its life?

15W is thin when cold. 40W is thick when the motor is hot. Your motor will not know that you are running it. Your tractor will start easier in the cold weather.
