Go for it. Small arms against military artillery. Uh yeah. The toy soldiers are delusional.

The military isn’t going to send a10s and nukes. What good is a dead nation? The small arms do prevent them from putting the people they don’t like in box cars. If small arms aren’t effective why has every socialist/dictator strategy in history been to take them?

Good point. Yet their armament isn't what the average American has in their gun cabinet. Long before I worry about the US military there would be armed groups running around making the mess we hear about in California look like Sunday School. By that point though we would be in complete anarchy... I'm not sure that I would want to live in that world. "They" say you would survive about 3 encounters before being completely overrun.

I guess I'm something of a survivalist but not a hoarder. I do keep a supply of ammo around though.

I have a few hundred rounds of .270 and 30 06. I don't keep them for protection or defense but to hunt for food should things in society get out of hand.

I also have a pistol range and frequently invite friends & family over for shooting parties. I used to buy 9mm and .45 ACP on sale in bulk. I used to stock 10,000 rounds or so but I'm down to a few hundred now. We don't shoot as much any more due to the shortage and expense of ammo.

I also have 10,000 rounds of WWII surplus .45 ACP that my father had stored in his garage. It's so old, I'm afraid to use it. The casings also have corrosive primers. I suppose I should get rid of it but I've read of some who reload using components from the old rounds. I don't have the time or equipment to do it though. Who knows, it might become practical to do in the future.

Why don't you sell it to collectors? You pocket the money, they get something they want to collect, and everyone is happy. Far better than letting it sit in your garage.

I read an interview with an executive from Remington Arms. He stated that part of the availability problem was folks weren’t just buying cases of ammo, but we’re buying pallets of ammo. Buying pallets of ammo is called hoarding, not being prepared. You can’t out gun the military. I have enough ammo to keep rioters and looters of my porch. My thinking is if you drop two or three the rest will scatter quickly.

I'm not sure it's worth much. It's loose, not boxed and it's pretty banged up. Still, it's an idea.

Take it to a gunshow and find out. Or better yet, send it to me. I will pay for all shipping.

I didn't realize WWII surplus ammo was a collector item.

I did sell my father's 1911 Colt, which was stored with the ammo. He was a captain in the Navy and it turned out to be a fairly rare "Navy" colt. The collector gave me $3K for the gun but he wasn't interested in the ammo.

-I have a variety of old 12 gauge shells which were my grandfather's... he passed away in 1973. A lot of them are paper and I'm not about to shoot them, but still find them interesting.
- I checked my email a few minutes ago to find that Midway has a new flyer out. I ordered >800 rounds of .22 shells and a couple boxes of .308, so at least I can start shooting again.
- A while back my NRA feed was interviewing consumers about the ammo shortage. One guy down in Florida said "This shop gets shipments in on Tuesday and Thursday, that shop gets it on Monday and Friday. I am there when they open and buy the maximum they allow me."

Guys like him are the problem. A lot of that ammo ends up on Gunbroker at scalper prices.

I’ve never heard of old ammo especially military surplus that’s nothing rare as being worth anything more than it’s face value as ammo.
