:) Hi Kris

I want to say think you, How did you open the pic so we can see them on one page? I used the same adapter that was on the 12 hp Kolher.
Gravely sells a gear they use for the Robin.
There adapter is too short for Honda, so I made a spacer to go between
the Kolher adapter and the Honda engine. Also the spacer that backs up the
gear you get from Gravely is too short.so made one.
By the way I have Prints of the parts.
Gravely is the only place I could find the Gear at $125.00.
I Had a machine shop make the other parts. He charged $200.00 for the lot.
I got the same parts made in another shop He charged $100.00 for them.
So I got a lathe so I can Make my own parts.
I cut a chunk out of the muffler,I believe if I made a extension and rasied
it up about 4 inches it would clear the hi & low lever?
Had to redo the draw bar. We never used the stand so did not put it back on
Took off Gas tank, Switch, Wiring, Thottle, Choke, Because the are on the
engine. Hope this helps.

Thank For letting me vent, Gravelymay

Congratilation GRAVELYMAY ! You make a very fine Job. It is not very easy to fix one other engine on a Gravely. I know (I fit a Dek- Diesel on my Gravely L ) You can be Proud of your work. Honda engines takes a lot less fuel Quiet and smooth You like it Thanks! Oldmech

Hi oldmech

Thanks for the comments, I was wandering, If any one talks about there
4 wh Gravely ? I Have 8123 when new 23 yr. ago, I put a 19 Hp series II
It got to using a lot of oil, So I went looking, It would cost about $3000.00
to relace with a new one. I overhaul one like It, With boring the Jugs and Turning the crank. Gaskets, pistions, rings not counting labor.Gets Close to
$ 1000.00 -$1500.00.
The Engine that had a crank that would work was a 24 Hp Honda GX970
so here it is.

thanks gravelymay

Hi oldmech

You where able to use the gear reduction wheels on your Gravely L
but Bruce L. his set don't look like he did any to change the rpm????
The Honda at 3600 rpm would have to be cut in half, to match the speeds
of the old Gravely. About 1800 Rpm???
If we can overcome this they would be easly.

thanks gravelymay

Hi! Gravelymay. Old Gravely L model with 5 Hp engine 1640 rpm. Give at Low about 1.5 mph and in high about 2 mph. With reduction Gear ratio 1 to 3 But with 5x12 tires vs 4.80x8 total reduction speed is 1 to 2.25 . So with 3280 rpm engine Ground speed with L model and reduction gear is about the same as L8 6.3 HP 2800 rpm in Low range . I have a L8 model I prefer my L model with reduction gear . More weight (+130 pounds) more dia Wheels . Just two speeds but the goods ones . Thanks Oldmech

Hi oldmech
What I am trying to get clear in my mind is if hook up a 3600 rpm engine??
How fast will the tractor travel on ground? thanks gravelymay

Just a side thought here, ground speed is an important consideration but how about the pto speed? The pto speed would also increase hence the attachments will be running beyond what they were designed for and will pose a safety risk for the operator if the engine were run at the 3600 rpm. I believe the real reason for running a big horsepower engine on an L is low speed torque, or should I say a torque output that would compare to the original engine at similar rpm's.

I was thanking rpm . The 1800 rpm on the old Gravely engine veris the 3600 rpm then we would have to gear down 1/2 speed this would give you back your torque, if the Honda had say 19. then you gear down this would double? maybe i am wrong ? Thanks Bruce

Gravelymay,On Gravely. We have two PTO Speed In low 1000rpm engine Give 350 rpm PTO . 2000 = 700 3000=1050. In High 1000 rpm engine Give 500 rpm PTO and 2000=1000 and 3000 rpm engine about 1500 rpm PTO. With Gear reduction only Ground speed change. as on L8 When we change range the PTO speed do not change. We cannot add gear reduction on L8. On tractor engine the torque is the most important. So I use 2000-2500 rpm engine speed because Max torque and max economy is about 2500 rpm on Gas or diesel engine after more speed torque drop or go down. Good luck Oldmech

Hi guys
I found out that Honda does make engine 2:1 reduction.
5.5 hp Gx160 KIRH2 2 7/8 X 22m Tapped M8 X 1.250
8 hp GX240 KIRA2 2 3/64 X 22m Tapped M8 X 1.250
9 hp GX270 RA2 2 3/64 X 22m Tapped M8 X 1.250
But all the engines I have found so far have a wet Clutch
also they are off set so that would pose more problem to match up.
This would give you back the 1800 rpm like the old L model came out with.
Keeping the tools running in factor spec. thanks gravelymay
