If it has a generator which I'm guessing is the case be sure battery is fully charged. Lots of folks forget the generator charges the battery and the battery runs the tractor, with an alternator the battery is charged and also the alternator runs the tractor. If you run at low rpm the battery will discharge and not have enough voltage to keep the motor running.

It started for the first time last night. I bought a new coil and points. Had the starter rebuilt and still nothing, almost though. Changed the condenser, took the #4 plug out to check firing, cranked it.....and SHE STARTED!!!!!!! So we put the plug back in and started it again. PTO and lifts work fine. I'm thinking I might have a good little tractor here. Now I'm getting excited!

That's a bit of circular thinking and logical fallacy.

You have load and charge rate.

If your charge rate exceeded load, you have charging of the storage battery, i load exceeds charge rate, you have discharge of storage battery. Method of charge is irrelevant, alt, Genny, solar, etc.

MY 8N RAN HOT TWICE WHILE BUSH HOGGIN. IS STARTED TO SPITTING AND SPUTTERING. I PARKED IT. ON THE SECOND TIME WHEN I PARKED IT I COULD HEAR THE RADIATOR BOILING HEAVY. I WAS TOLD TO CHECK THE THERMOSTAT. GOT A NEW ONE AND TOP HOSE. PUT THIS ON AND TRACTOR STARTED, THEN STARTED BOILING OVER. I PULLED THAT HOSE WITH THE THERMOSTAT IN THE CORRECT WAY, PULLED THE BOTTOM HOSE, PULLED THE RADIATOR. RADIATOR WAS FLUSHED AND CLEAN AND CLEAR. I REASSEMBLED, THE TRACTOR WOULDN'T START, JUST TURNS OVER BUT NEVER CATCHES UP. WE PULLED THE TRACTOR OFF WITH THE TRUCK, IT WOULD CRANK BUT RAN REALLY ROUGH, WHEN YOU PUSH IN THE CLUTCH IT WOULD CUT OFF. I WAS TOLD TO CHECK THE SPARK PLUGS TO SEE IF WATER HAD GOTTEN TO THEM, IT HADN'T. I OPENED THE DISTRIBUTOR AND CHECKED AND CLEANED IT. I REPLACED ALL SPARK PLUGS WITH NEW ONES. TRIED CRANKING AND IT FIRED UP. RAN ON HALF THROTTLE FOR 10 MINUTES OR MORE. DURING THIS TIME I CHECKED AND SAW THE RADIATOR WAS CIRCULATING. I NOTICED SMALL BLACK SKIMS OF WHAT LOOKED LIKE OIL. AFTER THE 10 MINUTES I CUT THE TRACTOR OFF. WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND NOW IT WON'T START. BEEN TOLD IN THE PAST THAT IT WAS PROBABLY LOOSING COMPRESSION, UNSURE. IF SO I WAS TOLD MAY NEED TO OVERHAUL. COSTS 2,000 - 3,000. CAN YOU READ THIS AND GIVE ME SOME IDEAS. HOPEFULLY NOT COSTLY. MANY THANKS.

FORGOT TO SAY THAT NEW FAN BELT APPLIED AND BATTERY STRONG. THE TRACTOR WAS REBUILT OVER 30 YEARS AGO.

first, check oil to make sure there is no water in it. if no water, lets move on.

The tractro may not have been overheating, but rather may have a blown head gasket letting compression gasses into the cooling system pressurizing it.

a compression test is in order, dry then wet. you may find one or more cyls with none or ultra low compression.

you can also rig up an adapter to pressurize a spark plug hole and see if it makes bubbles in the radiator.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

1949 8N with front distributor that has been converted to 12V and not by me. I am somewhat mechanical but don't know much about carbs, distributors, points, etc. :( I have done lots of searching and am wondering if I am on the right path.

Symptoms -- Tractor was working fine and then recently I was having issues with the tractor taking longer to start (which has led me to running down the battery a few times and needing to be charged) and randomly shutting off while in use. This is in Michigan and previous to these issues it would fire up strongly even when 0 degrees outside. I thought I was having issues with my points or distributor because it would run for 15 to 30 minutes and shut off and be impossible to start again for a few hours, but this last time it has been 2 days and I *still* cannot get it to start. A few days ago while it was running if I tried plowing too much snow the engine would spit and almost stall unless I put the clutch in and let it run for a few minutes. This usually resolved itself although once or twice the tractor shut off with a backfire.

Short version of troubleshooting:
- Gas tank is 3/4 full with new gas
- Gas knob has been tried rotated to 2 turns and all the way
- Tractor will keep turning over until battery dies without firing
- Jumped wires on ignition switch
- Checked one spark plug and it was getting spark while cranking (held close to engine block while cranking)
- Carb fast drips (almost pours) gas after trying to start while choking for too long -- check the single plug I can remove (on the side of the road) and no gas is on the plug
- Poured small amount of gas into the engine after taking out the spark plug -- with it being jumped it will fire once or twice but that is it
- Tried starting while jump starting without pouring gas into spark plug hole -- no dice
- Tried starting while being towed for ~1 mile -- would putter and almost start but when I put the clutch in to let it run on it's own it would die.

My buddy helping me tow figures that it isn't getting gas -- the one spark plug I could get out is not soaked in gas and towing it will not jump start it even though it was producing a spark.

My tentative next steps were going to be to put in new spark plugs and maybe put in some carb cleaner or something?

Any help or tips would be appreciated. I don't have a garage, have limited tools, and it is cold outside but I will try my best to follow any advice you all have. Thanks!

I have the exact same problem, word for word. Did you find out anything that helps? Please let me know. Thank you. pdcat50@yahoo.com
