gear oil vs. grease?

/ gear oil vs. grease? #21
One more question Drizler,
I don't know WHICH gasket he was talking about, there is a round shaft SEAL at top with the driveshaft going thru it and the SAME SEAL under the gearbox where the short shaft goes down to the blade unit.... I presume that would be like changing an "auto wheel bearing seal" in a brake brum? hammer out tap in?
Thanks

Sorry, one more question....IF I replace the shaft seals HOW do I get to old "grease gun" grease OUT OF THERE? Maybe it would flush out with kerosine....or fill it to the brim with gear oil and it will eventually LEAK out? This is the old "angle headed" Bush hog 48" cutter.

if you replace the seals so it will hold oil, then flush the box with kero or diesel..

My old man put a zerk on his rotary cutter when it started leaking and pumped it full of whatever was in the grease gun right before he went out to mow. I don't know how many hours it has on it, but it's been running intermittently since sometime in the mid-80's. Maybe he just got lucky.

What's cornhead grease?
