A general thought: The purpose of 4wd is to enable you to get stuck in ever-more-inaccessible places.

Really depends on your terrain and use. Wouldn’t have anything but R4s for the place I nave now.

Along the lines of not getting stuck in the first place, as my 10-yr old R4s tread gets shallower and shallower, I've looked a bit at deep-tread, high flotation tires. These look like R1s except that they are a bit wider and have lots more tread bars. I suspect a tire like this would wear faster (and cost a lot more), though. Others, with lots of deep tread bars aren't rated as high-flotation, but sure look like they would have good traction...for example Product
