A neat drone video of the Calumet entering the St Clair downbound and you can clearly see the side slipping. Who needs thrusters?

The Queen and a Queen Mother morning photos by Dave Schauer

“Queen of the Great Lakes” is the longest vessel active on the Great Lakes of the United States and Canada.

At 1013 ft 6 inches, The Paul R. Tregurtha is the current Queen and the longest reigning the Great Lakes has seen. She is one of thirteen “1,000 footers.” In second place are five ships at 1004 ft.

SS Edward L. Ryerson was the third of the thirteen 730 ft lake freighters built from 1959-1962, each of which shared the Queen of the Great Lakes title. They topped the Edmund Fitzgerald which was 729 ft 3 in. Source destinationduluth.co/QueenGreatLakesWiki

Since 2009, the Ryerson has been in long-term layup. Still, ship lovers haven’t given hope that she will be resurrected into active service. According to Wikipedia, on February 7, 2023, Boatnerd reported that Edward L. Ryerson's automatic identification system (AIS) was reactivated for the first time since 2009. The Ryerson is what Great Lakes ships are supposed to look like (to me at least ;) )

I see the Sherwin is rotting away in the St. Mary's.

Man. Long way to the head. :ROFLMAO:

But seriously, that is too cool. You can just imagine the creeks and groans and other noises of a live ship?
Friend of mine worked at the local drydocks.
New hires were asked if they were afraid of heights and tight places.
They would answer no.
Lot of them didn't make first break when they got in the boats.

Soo lock news--------------------------
News Release: Soo Locks Open Early for 2024 Shipping Season

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will open the Poe Lock to all marine traffic at 6 p.m. on March 22, marking the start of the 2024 Great Lakes shipping season.

The shipping industry requested an early season opening due the urging of major steel producers. “The St. Lawrence Seaway has announced that it will open this spring on March 22. We would like to match that early opening at the Soo,” President of the Lake Carriers’ Association James Weakley said. “We also note that the Seaway strike in 2023 and extreme wind events toward the end of the last operating season left the fleet with undelivered cargo.”

“Our winter maintenance period is a critical time for us to invest in our aging locks,” Detroit District Commander Lt. Col. Brett Boyle said. “This year, a number of factors worked in our favor that allowed us to safely deliver this critical maintenance and also open to navigation traffic a few days early, with the St. Lawrence Seaway.”
