Hello, I am willing to buy this motor for a hydraulic winch. 22.8 cu in White Hydraulic Motor 5375A582AAAAE | Low Speed High Torque Hydraulic Motors | Hydraulic Motors | Hydraulics | www.surpluscenter.com

I called their customer service, they have not idea how to connect it.

What I want to do is to free unwind the winch when I want to go grab something, but also do hold the weight when I release the directional valve after pulling some weight
Obviously I want to only pull something, one direction on the motor

From my understanding I should TEE one Work Port on the motor with the Clutch Port of the motor to one work port of the Valve, and connect the other motor port to the other valve work port. Am i right? Has anyone experience with these? I do not see any specs on how much pressure the clutch port can take so I worry not to explode anything.

Do have some form of brake on the winch or is this motor intended to hold the load?

It will not really hold the load. ITs for a winch type firewood processor. like wallenstein or hud-son badger. I just need to pull the log on the ramp .I will have a clamp. I more worry of destroying the motor by a wrong connection. And i think that with this motor I will not need a motor spool valve.

I have no experience with this style motor but reading the specs on the page you attached it does appear that you do need to pressurize the clutch port to operate. Not sure if the clutch port needs to be pressurized before the motor inlet is pressurized to operate or if applying pressure at the same time will close the clutch. I.e. if pressurized at the same time will the oil just circulate through the motor like freewheeling?

I got your point. You mean since it will freewheeling no pressure is going to be built on the clutch port. Hmm, very nice observation, i hadn't thought of that. I have to call the cross ltd..

There are valves that will do what you need to, in this case, engage the clutch.

It's called Overcentre centre valves.

These valves are used to control actuator痴 movements and block in one direction (single pilot ) or in both directions (double pilot ) in order to enable the following functions:

under control descent of a load: load痴 weight doesn稚 carry it away, as the valve prevents any cavitations of the actuator;

limited maximum pressure in the case of shocks created by loads, overloads or sudden manoeuvrings (load control with opened centre distributor).

These are usually bolt-on valves, which won't work with your motor.

Anyway, these valves provide steady pressure to release a brake, or in your case, to engage the clutch.

What I think it could be done, is using a priority valve after the control valve, so the priority flow would go to the clutch and the rest would go to the motor. This would only work on one direction, but since it's a winch, it should be no big deal.

I do not believe The over center or counterbalance valves would help in this application. Reason is the counterbalance valve restricts the outlet of the motor so both motor ports are pressurized. I suspect the motor may still stay in freewheel mode vs engaging the clutch.

Polemedis
For this motor to free wheel the clutch port must be vented to tank. This requirement might dictate having a dedicated clutch shift valve. I suspect that any pressure on the clutch port will increase the pull force in free wheel mode.

Do you have experience of on how easy it is to unwind a motor that is connected to a motor spool directional valve? (The ones that have the work ports connecte in neutral) That was my 1st approach before I saw that "clutch motor". Will it be realistic to pull a cable out of a spool for 30-40ft or not? I really do not want to design a mechanical disconnect on the winch. Its so simple right now.

Roy what do you think on the priority valve that ptsg suggested? Or what if I put a check valve with 150psi cranking pressure between the TEE and the work port? Then the clutch will get oil first.
A quick hit on the opposite side on the directional valve will vent the clutch to the tank, no?

Anyway I contacted Cross ltd, I am waiting to hear back from them

I think it will be quite hard to unwind the cable while also rotating the motor. Specially with cold oil.

I made a mechanical disconnect on my winch. It makes it really easily to work with.

The gear just slides on the motor shaft as shown in picture 2 and 3. I did add a detent to the fork. But yes, a mechanical disconnect will complicate things a bit.

Thanx for the photos man! They look great. But I am a little deficient in engineering and I have not many tools (other than a CNC Plasma cutter). It looks like that my best option is a dedicated 3way valve
