Put the PTO in front position or a position where you can turn the shaft by hand, in order to line it up with the splines.
Get a push button type PTO. Those collar types are ergonomically wrong.
Lube it up. I use the white grease on the shaft and put some of that easy slip stuff on the inside of the PTO head.
Some other guys had some good ideas about supporting it that I haven't had to go to yet.
