Similar problem with L45 on OTT discussing lack of grip with backhoe thumb. Knowing the pressure first step in diagnosing the problem.
Thanks. I took a read of it. Unfortunately no finish posting on what they did to fix it.

I’m no expert.
A gauge pressure would tell if dead head pressure to relief valve is obtained. Relief valves are plumbed to control pressure from the pump side. Once the control valve is closed, pressure bleed off is either thru the control valve, internal cylinder or external leak. The smaller thumb cylinder always looses to the stronger curl cylinder for clamping force. Operator technique plays an important factor in wear and tear to the thumb’s hydraulic components. Same applies to grapples. More sophisticated machines incorporate cushion valves to help protect their hydraulics from dynamic loading.

Could be as simple as a couple of O-rings in the control valve. I would check the pressure first. I would not be surprised to see thumb hydraulic circuit pressure exceed max pump pressure from dynamic loads. Your experience would be helpful in tracking down the problem.

Dug out a couple more stumps last evening. Not a chance of clamping and holding anything. I have no time over the next few weeks to be figuring it out. But I will eventually fix it, or get it fixed at the Kubota dealer, and let you know what it was.

So you can't curl the bucket underneath stumps then clamp with thumb? Sounds like you and others have said not enough pressure, however I'm sure the curl cylinder for bucket is more powerful than the thumb cylinder, just cleaned up a bunch of stumps from overgrown Xmas tree cutoffs I'm curious if the thumb has a separate relief valve separate from the main system as it should relieve pressure at less psi than the rest of system or you'd probably break something in that mechanism. (I'm not an expert in hydraulic systems) but I'm Pretty sure my mini x does. Good luck and I'm curious now.

The heavy duty debris & pallet forks are working well. I had a full day off today and put them and L45 to work.

You can see how if loader and forks are brought down you can see the end of the forks. Very handy when getting under branches and rocks.

The thumb fix turned out to be a spring in a valve was missing. I had them fix that, engine oil and filter change, and hydraulic oil and filters changed.💲Yikes. You want to play, sometimes you got to pay.

I bet you could get 50Hp and big time torque easily out of an L45.
Suggest rear wheel weights or liquid ballast with wheel spacers for stability.
Also I gave my loader slightly bigger muscles.
No ill effects with 7 years of use.

I like this TLB just the way it is. If I decide I want more power I’ll move to an M59.

Glad you are having good luck with yours. I really like the TLB series, especially the hydrostatic transmissions ones. I have owned “several”. Great for a lot of loader work, and they are also very nice when mowing with a 3-point rear mower.

Another awesome functionality of them is the ease of getting off and on the machine. Just a quick step to get on and off, great for landscaping work!

I went from one extreme to the other. An old John Deere with a Sims cab that had two part doors. A good old workhorse. But I Yi Yi! What a pain to get in and out of! And now back to an open station Kubota L45 TLB with tilt steering wheel. Wow! What a difference. Love it!!!!!!
