I'm always amazed when people use a rifle to shoot a snake. My mother used to follow, "There's a snake!" with "Get a hoe!":D I've used a shotgun many times and plinked at snakes with a 22 when I was a kid, but a stick or hoe is easily my preferred tool for sending the snake to belly-crawler heaven.;)

I agree. My grandma was tough. One afternoon she came over to our house and said we may need to take her to the hospital. Why? She got bit on the hand by a snake in the garden. Knowing there hadn't been a poisonous snake on our block on 10-15 years, I asked her to show it to me. It was just a big garter snake. Dead. I asked her how it bit her on the hand. Was it hiding under some leaves or something? Nope. She said she didn't want it in her garden, so she grabbed it and it bit her while she killed it... with her bare hands!!! We took her to the doctor to have the wound cleaned. I believe she was 95 or so when that happened. :)
