The new growth in pic #4 can be killed with 0.4 OZ glyphosate concentrate mixed with 1 cup of water. Repeat on any new growth and it will be outta there in one growing season. It's mostly in knowing how to apply that amount for full contact. Use the same process for small areas of sumac, johnson grass, small trees etc.

There are several varieties that are winter hardy to at least Zone 5-6, perhaps colder. Phyllostachys and Fargesia are considered top hardy to -10F. Even at those temps, the rhizomes -- at least some of them -- will easily survive.

Interesting. Thanks, John.

Actually, I like the looks of bamboo and it makes a great evergreen screen.
If it weren't for the spreading aspect of it, I would plant some around my place.

I've heard of at least one variety of clumping bamboo that doesn't spread, but I've never seen any.

Eastexan:

Fargesia is a clumping bamboo and is cold hardy, although from your location that probably doesn't matter. Thamnocalamus and Borinda are two others that are clumping and (fairly, at least) cold hardy.

Clumping bamboos are a completely different animal than running bamboo. Clumpers have a different rhizome structure and stay confined in a circular root ball. It does grow outward, but the whole clump grows by a few inches a year and the root ball stays intact. Growers who have worked with bamboo for years have been developing ones with much better habits than the running bamboo that comes to mind for most of us.
