Traction Traction in Mud

I did similar when building my driveway as there was a lot of fill dirt used after removing small, buried boulders. Some areas were very soft and even my Jeep could get stuck. I laid 1.5" of slag over the whole driveway and end of problem. I think they interlocked well enough to not require packing down into the soft stuff. It actually worked far better than expected.

Good advice from all: filling in mud holes in on my list for the Fall if dry enough...too much to do this summer.... Around here 'bank run gravel' is cheapest fill to get delivered, and I suppose it would work OK, but not as good as 'crushed stone'.

Always wear boots that are taller than the mud is deep.

And if you do that enough times, eventually the hole fills up with boots and there is no more problem.

Here's two pics of the mud holes.

Those look exactly like my two mud holes in the back 40. I actually did a double take.

I haven't run my tractor through them yet this year, but my rtx1120 has plowed through them many times.

Pictures like that make me somewhat glad for the rockpile I have here. Then it gets to garden time and I remember again.

Having off-roaded for 30 years and seeing that you were not dragging your diffs, you might have been better off just following your original ruts. Its often the top sod layer providing the most resistance and once you have created the ruts, the next pass will be easier in the same ruts. Since your on your own property it is not an issue but we call following the ruts "Thread Lightly"

If you had some of these, mud would be fun

Those look like they can be swung out and locket so they don't touch the ground when travelling on hard surfaces. Of course it would make the tractor a lot wider. I have also seen a type similar that is bolted to the inside of the rim that has huge paddle like fins that stick out 12" or more past the wheel. They also wont touch the ground on hard surfaces.

Those mud holes don't look all that bad. Iffy on R4s but I'd have no problem heading through on my Ags. These Kubotas are actually great in the mud with the right tires. **** I'd try that mudhole with my truck just to see. lol

They look more like vernal pools than mud holes!
Looks like the land slopes downhill, going from left to right, based on assuming the tree trunks are growing more or less vertical.
If that's the case, you may be able to drain off a lot of that surface water by cutting a drainage ditch across the trail.
