Which Old Ford Tractor??

A little info on the Sherman Transmissions.

The first thing to understand is that the Sherman is an auxiliary transmission that resides in the bell housing. It takes the place of the input shaft of the transmission and has its own input shaft that goes into the splines of the clutch. Because the the double clutch available on the x60 models is physically larger, the Sherman was not an option on those tractors. Yes, it would be awesome to have an 861 with a Sherman, but they just don't come that way.

There are several versions of the Sherman. The most common is the over/under. This give 3 ranges. Pushing the handle forward is high, pulling it back is low, and pulling it out (away from the tractor) and back is straight, which is equivalent to the tractors gearing with no Sherman.

Apparently step up and step down Shermans were also available. These would offer only 2 range selections. I've never personally used either of these.

Another vote for an 861 diesel. Excellent old tractors if they were taken care of. Strong little jokers to.
