Thanks for another good video. Purring like a kitten! Watching the voltmeter it looks like your regulator might be what is cutting the charge back. Might try putting your hand voltmeter on the alternator and see what it is putting out at fast idle. Just a thought.

My YM14 with home made reg does that too. its been like it for nearly 18 months and still working fine. worry about it when it dies.

Hey all, it has been a while, so here is an update after roughly 30 hours of use, some of it pretty tough use.

The short version: so far, everything is perfect!

The long version: I've put about 30 hours on the 336 since the overhaul. I've graded my very long driveway a few times, rotary cut my neighbor's field, rotary cut quite a few saplings down in order to begin making a pasture for my horse, tilled my garden (post-growing season), disced my front yard in order to reseed it, smoothed it out using a back blade and moved some round bales. All of this in addition to using it for regular lawn mowing using a finish mower. I'm excluding all of the tiny things I use it for, like using a boom pole to move heavy objects, like when I use my table saw in other areas of my property. Those little things are what really makes my tractor great to have around.

All in all, I'm very happy with the results of my rebuild, both the aesthetic and the mechanical side. The engine runs perfectly, idles well, only has visible smoke when throttling up and, even limited to 2nd and 3rd ranges, it has enough power to use a 6' tiller and rotary cut at rated speed. Was it all worth the time and money? Just the experience of it all was worth that. A college course on diesel engines would have cost more in time and money. As a benefit, I get a working tractor once the final exam (initial start-up) is complete.

Moving forward, I still have some things I'd like to add, like rear remotes and fixing the 1st range, but funds dictate that stuff and I'm in no rush.

Thanks for the curiosity. And thanks again to everyone who helped ensure it turned out this way. Restore threads are bitter sweet in this way. They are vast adventures which, if done well, end abruptly and don't come up until the next issue, which hasn't yet occurred.

For those who enjoyed reading this thread, be sure to check out parts one and two. Same drama, same suspense, same dramatic changes :)

Cheers, and happy tractoring!

Sniff; I love happy endings. Seriously, this has been one of the best threads I can recall in terms of a turnaround project and the True Grit involved. Congratulations on an excellent job.
If you had to do it all over again...would you, and would you go about things the same way and in the same order? What would you do different?

See we just can't let a good story die. If I'm not mistaken, another owner asked for Domush to work on HIS tractor ...

So lets see if we can't get the answers to the "what would you have done differently" video documented off the NEXT project?
There a few more tractors out here that could contribute to Domush's Master degree in Diesel, so How about starting the 201 class now? Why wait?
I got dibs for a seat in the front row ... :D ::popcorntub:

I owned two yanmar 336D's both with front loaders. Wonderful tractors. loved the powershift and 4 ranges. Sold the first one as I was showing winches I build and the fellow wanted the whole system and I bought a new one.
At 300hrs it broke a rodbolt. Just a faulty one, was a bummer. Sent the rod out the side of the engine knocking off the starter. Was a fix I could do though. It later caught fire and burned to the ground. I looked for a replacement and JD made a deal with Yanmar not to distribute them as they had JD built by Yanmar and I couldn't find a replacement.
I still have all the books for the 336D. operators, parts, and maintenance for it, they are the originals.

It's been over a decade since your excellent write ups. Do you have a status of the machine today?

I like that theory. That makes a lot of sense. It's hard to believe that itty bitty clean spot on the pickup filter circulated enough oil to ever make 50PSI, which only makes your theory more likely. I'd love for that to be the case. We'll find out tomorrow. I have the whole day clear to work on it.

tcartwri, you must have missed it, but I mentioned I have already removed the bearing caps and the bearings are in perfect shape.

I meant to buy some plastigauge today in order to verify the tolerance, but forgot :(. I think I'll skip that step for now. If I need to come back to it, I will.
WHOOPS! I shoulda looked at the date. Oh Well, in any case the advice is still good. You cannot judge bearing clearance by eye. They need to be measured and Plastigauge is a good and time tested way to do so.
Eric
Don't skip the Plastigauge. Even if the bearings look good there is no way you can judge by eye if the clearance has been beaten larger by .005". You may have gotten real lucky and have just beaten the bearing clearance larger without damaging anything. But if the clearance is too large and you start the engine maybe then the bearings spin. Just my 2 cents and all that. But you do have the pan off and it takes only a little work to Plastigauge the bearings.

Domush hasn't been on TBN since Apr 25, 2016. Doubtful there will be an update.
