Kubota L39 TLB
Hello all,

I own a Kubota L39 (30.5 PTO HP)and am looking at getting my first set of disc harrows. What should I be looking for in a set? What size can I drag? Is it dependent on weight?
I would be working in mainly South Carolina sandy bottoms. Not too much clay.

Thanks for your help

Might do 5 foot, BUT 4 foot would be better.--If in plowed ground you will have traction problems and in hard ground the disk just wont cut much at all.---In your sand, traction would be my concern, if it wer me! thanks; sonny580

Call Ted or Travis at Everything Attachments. 828-464-1200. I believe they are just North of you and should know your soil type.

Good people, good advice. ETA makes the most readily adjustable Tandem Disc Harrows.

What difference do the different types of discs make?

OFFSET DISCS are interchangeable in function with gang plows. They are for opening ground/primary tillage in a single pass. Built very heavy, require considerable tractive power to pull, relative to a Tandem Disc Harrow.

MOUNTED TANDEM DISC HARROWS are more for smoothing and leveling ground, although at about 24" diameter pans in sandy soil, such as you and I share, they work pretty well for primary tillage as well. To level fields over several seasons Disc Harrows must be move over the ground at a brisk pace. Slow just drops dirt back where it was.

I am 100% sure your L39 can pull a Tandem Disc Harrow with 22" diameter pans. I am 80% certain your L39 can pull a Tandem Disc Harrow with 24" diameter pans. (I do not know the weight of an L39 without the heavy duty Backhoe attached.)

Very generally~~~~
~ Better to buy max diameter pan diameter, for good cutting ability, as wide as your tractor or a bit wider.
~~ However, some who disc annually or semi-annually might not need as much cutting ability due to perennially soft ground so would prefer wider coverage.
~~~ For game food plots you want a Disc slightly narrower than rear tread width, so it will pass between trees.
It all DEPENDS........
Is your tractor 4x4 ? If it is I wouldn't be scared of a 6' disc. Whatever you do get one that is adjustable, I have an older Bush Hog disc that I use behind my small tractor that is 6', I think Brown mfg out of Alabama still makes a heavy built adjustable 6' disc. Good luck, Charlie.
I have the Landpride DH2560 behind an L2501. It is a good match for the NE Florida sandy dirt just to give you reference. Not sure if the soil in your area is similar though.
The disc is 60 inches wide and has adjustable angle 18 inch scalloped pans.
Weight is around 650 lbs and exerts about 35 lbs per pan.
I would not want a lighter disc for unbroken ground or ground that has been overgrown for a few years. In fact, in those cases more weight would be better.
In really soft ground , gang angle can be set closer to straight to prevent stopping the tractor.
Although your tractor has more HP then mine, the tractor weight is within 200 lbs so the ground engaging performance will be similar.
Now if you got a rottotiller, your tractor would run a much larger one then I could.
So my opinion would be to get a 60 inch disc that weighs 625 to 700 lbs and has adjustable gang angles. I think you will be happy with the performance.
EDIT: Disregard my comparing my tractor to the OP.
I thought he had an L3901.
I see now he has a TLB series which is a completely different machine then the 01 series.
