Good Value
Model Year: 1955

I will admit that this was a good tractor in its day, but things where different in 1955, even that this evens runs is something to say about the quality. I will admit that there is better tractors on the market now, but for a very low cost I think this is the way to go.

Pros: Very low price.
Cons: No modern convinces.

1956 Ford 600
Model Year: 1956

Haven't owned it long, but so far...great performance. Starts easily and this one doesn't burn oil. Replaced left rear tire tube. Installed the screw-on oil filter modification. Replaced the gasoline shut off valve under the tank. Cleaned, lubed, oiled everything. Everything works as advertised. Wishing it had a "live" PTO. Finish mowing is okay but the cultivator work is slow going.

Pros: Inexpensive, reliable, parts easily found, many still in service.
Cons: Lacks live PTO, limited horsepower (23).

My 640 is a rock solid, great running reliable machine. I looked extensively for this particular model as it is the make and model I first learned on as a kid over 30 years ago. I use it with a Ford 907 series Flail mower and a box blade as well.

Pros: Great runner, plenty of power, very dependable.
Cons: The usual maintenance an older machine requires.

I bought this tractor from my neighbor last year. The only problem that I have had was me not turning the key off when it stalled. This caused the condenser to get fried. It has a old rear snowthrower which is a blast to operate if the snow is not wet. I ended up using the back blade for the second half of the winter. We have 3 acres and I plowed & tilled it with attachments. Got a dirt digging attachment which is great for moving & dumping dirt & gravel. This summer I bought a 6 ft finish mower for it and it does a great job.

Pros: Reliable.
Cons: None.

Excellent Value
Model Year: 1955

It was very used when I bought it and pivot points that had no grease fittings on FEL and backhoe were very loose. The ones with grease fittings were better but still worn. Tach hadn't worked for at least the prior owner and looked like it may have been at 3700 hours when smashed. It leaked engine oil badly but ran okay. I fixed rear seal on motor, put in new tach, and replaced broken zerks and installed an engine heater. It sits outside, but does get regular oil changes and greasing. It has over 1000 hrs on new tach. It has been worked very hard moving rock, gravel, wood, and snow. It looks terrible and works well. It doesn't appear any more worn out now than when I got it.

Pros: Lots of hard work done at minimal expense.
Cons: Looks terrible. Hard to work in tight spots.

I've Been Disabled Since 2000, Then in 2011 Classed as Retired
Model Year: 1956

I had traded my tired 9n in on a 1956 640 to upgrade to more power & better hydraulics. It needed much TLC at the time. Had the steering box repair, & a Sherman Hi/Lo installed at the same time. Then I did all tin repairs/replacements, plus new paint . In 2001 I found & bought a badly deteriated 1952 8n Funk conversion. Hauled it home & started tear down & evaluations. First on agenda was tearing the engine down, then taking it to a machine shop for evaluation & machining. Picked up newly machined (.060) block , head, & everything else at machine shop. Started locating parts & ordering immediately. $2,500.00 later, I had the engine completely rebuilt & ready for install. Next I installed a Sherman Hi/Lo ahead of the original 4 spd. After completeing hyd. oil removal & cleaning out transmission & rear end, the all new hydr oil install, found a large crack in bottom of 4 spd trans. Located a clean empty trans case , so I did a complete 4 spd RR. Next I installed my newly acquired Everett transmission. I then found & acquired but still have to install a Howard gear reduction trans. After all that extra work & newly rebuilt engine install, I had my engine running smooth as a kitten purring. Now being broke, I have to wait for some new cash to come in so I can get back to completing my full rebuild. When finished, I hope to own the only 1952 8n Funk conversion with 6 cyl OHV with 4 transmissions. Man I sure can't wait to be able to show pictures. God bless.

Pros: Enjoying.
Cons: Unknown.

Great Tractor!
Model Year: 1955

I love this tractor. It runs like a champ, does everything I want and is simple to maintain. This model has a 134 cubic inch "Red Tiger" engine that pumps out 31 HP. She has a four-speed transmission with the Sherman over/under option that gives it 12 forward gears and 3 reverse. PTO and hydraulics complete the package.

Pros: Easy to work on with basic hand-tools.
Cons: Local dealer is pricey and so must rely on the Internet for parts.

Ford 640

A simple American that's easy to work on, plenty of power for chores around here. Built when a small handful of SAE wrenches could fix anything on the tractor. Parts are still easy to acquire and lots of technical help available. Some of the members of this forum have always had good info and suggestions to keep the Ford going when I would get a little stumped as I was rebuilding all the components. The tractor is all original and has been rejuvenated after being totally submerged in the Brazos River for several days. A real little workhorse for light to medium type work, cheap to operate.

Pros: Reliable, cost of operating, simple design, parts, American made.
Cons: Manual Steering, Mechanical PTO makes overide clutch a necessity.

The Worlds Greatest Tractor: Ford Jubilee
Model Year: 1956

I work a Jubilee almost every day. Sure it does not have power steering or a fancy transmission. But it does one thing very well. It runs reliably every day. I don't have to fix it to use it. Everything works the first time. Its strong as all get out and does everything I ask of it. From planting corn to digging a pond, my Jubliee will get it done. Sure shes not the prettiest in the show but she'll still be running when the rest of them are in the shop.

Pros: She's been paid for for 56 years!
Cons: Can't think of any.

New Old Tractor
Model Year: 1955

I love this tractor. I bought it because my efforts of maintaining a planted pine field with my Craftsman failed. I had it cleared, smoothed, and thought my big Garden Tractor with a 54" blade would handle it. It wouldn't. I'd never driven a tractor before I bought this Ford. I love the tractor, the way it looks and the way it runs. Had a little trouble at first, it had something stuck in the air intake to the carburetor. I got that fixed, and it purrs. I have a five foot bush hog mower and a cultivator (haven't used it yet). I bought it seven miles away from home and had to drive it on the highway. Got it up to 21 MPH.

Pros: Most everything.
Cons: The hydraulics seem weird. The mower won't stay at the height I set it to.

Great older tractor
Model Year: 1956

Gasoline tractor. I am a weekend warrior. It is currently on our family farm in VT. used in the fields and woods. It came with a Lord loader and 2-speed primary (overdrive). It is well matched for 60" brush hog and 72" 3PT finish mowers (though more power would be nice). A 7 foot 3PT sickle bar is no problem. The 'live' 3PT hitch makes mowing much easier (than 8N). With a TSC 3PT lifting boom it moved large trees and 1000 lb machines. It has handled a frame mount back-hoe and a 3 PT hitch backhoe well. 3PT log splitter and bback-hoe work well off loader hydraulics. Gas engine helps with starting in winter.

Pros: 'Stone' reliable
Cons: No PS,
