790 John Deere
790 on the Horse Farm
Model Year: 2000

We purchased this tractor with model 70 bucket new. It's been a great little workhorse. I've put it through a number of operations - mowing, raking, spreading, hauling lumber, sand, gravel, snow, hay. There've been a couple times with a full loader going downhill I felt uncomfortable, and would've liked some ballast. The three point has a solid feel. Bucket controls work great. My wife has a hard time getting me off this tractor. I've managed to get her stuck a couple times in axle-deep muck, despite the locking differential, which, with the 4WD gets you out of most sticky situations. Love this little baby.

Pros: Plenty.
Cons: The hook on the 3pt broke.

JD 790 w/ 300 FEL 4X4
Model Year: 2007

Placed wheels in there widest stance and added water/antifreeze (all four). This helped its pulling power, side slope (lower center of gravity) and counter weight for loader. Currently trying to find JD 7 3PT Backhoe attachment. Manual transmission a plus for power however, a reverser or Hydrostat would be better for loader operations. Overall this thing is outstanding and fits my needs in the hills of Alabama.

Pros: Good fuel economy at lower rpms.
Cons: No reverser.

Has done almost everything I've asked of it. The loader could be stronger.

Pros: Very dependable; no trouble.
Cons: Lighter and top heavy compared to the old Ford 641d I had.

790 John Deere
Does Everything Well
Model Year: 2003

I've used this tractor for mowing brushy fields with a 5 ft brush hog, I've hauled logs out of my woodlot, I've moved gravel piles, dug topsoil from a decades old brush/compost pile. I've plowed snow for hours. I've hauled everything and more. For every task, this tractor has vastly exceeded my expectations. It runs flawlessly, starts in sub zero weather with a block heater, and is easy to service. I have three complaints: I can't put the seat back quite far enough, sometimes the gear synchronizers don't allow for quick shifting, and salt from the road immediately brings on rust. It was an expensive investment but is a superb and well designed and hardworking machine.

Pros: Super well designed and surprisingly powerful. Does everything well. Runs forever on a tank of fuel.
Cons: Seat doesn't go back far enough. Shifting into gear not always smooth.

Generally very good; I downgraded reliability because a few small parts have failed because of faulty design or assembly.

Pros: Exactly the right size for my needs.
Cons: Nothing serious.

790 John Deere
Deere 790 4WD
Model Year: 1991

Bought to harvest hardwoods on my land. Logging crew had made a mess of things 15-20 years ago thinning with a skidder - they didn't wait for freeze or drying and gouged 2-3 foot gashes along the trails they used. The forester who was supposed to be overseeing the job must have been busy somewhere else. The 790 was small enough to ride the remaining high spots and strong enough to smooth things out with a bucket. 4WD plus the bucket got me out of all of the deeper muck when I bot stuck. I couldn't lift a 12 foot butt log from an old pine that a neighbor dropped off, but for everything else I've wanted to load on my band saw mill it's done fine. The dealer tells me that they're still selling basically the same machine now. So I guess other people have had good luck with them too. It's not very heavy but with loaded tires and reversed rims to get some extra width it's been stable enough. It came with chains but I've never needed them for snow plowing.

Pros: Outstanding fuel economy. Tough and reliable, but now I know why they recommend a skit plate for use in the woods.
Cons: Fuel shut off by the filter came unhinged - two.

790 John Deere
Good Solid CUT
Model Year: 2005

I looked at several manufacturers of CUT before I purchased this one. What sold me on the green over the other colors was that in any direction that I traveled there was a dealer within 20 miles. JD has been around a along time and I considered this tractor to be a long term investment so I wanted to be certain of parts availability far into the future. So far the only items I've needed to purchase are filters and oil. I did have one of the side panels develop a crack near one of the welds but the dealer came out and replaced it no charge within the warranty period. Certainly with the 300 loader a HD transmission would be nice, but I get by with the shifting. I've added a few shims in the hydraulic valve to get me a little better lift, didn't go crazy, just wanted to be closer to 900# capacity with the forks attached. The tractor will pull a 60" brush mower through just about anything I've encountered on my property. Added a 72" Frontier grooming mower that works great along with a 60" Frontier tiller.

Pros: Good solid basic tractor with dealer support all over the place.
Cons: With all wheel drive you cannot have a mid mount PTO; if you want to move round bales get something a little bigger.

790 John Deere
Perfect for What I Need
Model Year: 2007

790, FWD, JD300 FEL, 5' Frontier BB, Quik Hitch, R4 tires with fluid, 7' Frontier blade, 5' Frontier RC, tire chains, did hydraulic pressure increase to 2500. Replaced a JD 4010 which was much larger than I needed. This has been the ideal size for landscaping, digging large rocks, mowing, moving snow, plowing and anything else you need to do on small acreage. I keep on top of the maintenance and have had no problems.

Pros: Reliability, size.
Cons: Lack of space around feet.

790 John Deere
Used John Deere 790
Model Year: 2004

Prior to purchasing this used 790 I did a good amount of research on machines that would support a 59 Inch Front Mount Snow Blower. I had owned a 1962 JD 3010 Diesel Farm Tractor with a 7’ wide brush hog and an old rear 3-PT McKee snow blower. I decided to sell the very reliable 3010 for three reasons, we purchased a smaller 14 acre wooded lot that has about 2 acres of cleared area so looked for a small tractor; as I approach retirement age I found twisting me neck for two hours using the rear pto snow blower was becoming more of a task, and lastly; the initial smoke in winter with the 3010 was overwhelming. Since purchasing the 790 I’ve learned several things which I’ll share. 1) To change all the filters and lubricants with JD Parts runs about $350.00. 2) The 59 inch snow blower requires a Mid PTO and three mounting kits to accommodate the JD59 blower, they are: JD BM21660, BM21379 and BM16855 totaling: $1,817.00. 3) Trying to figure-out the price of a new JD59 was a bit confusing, if you search on the internet you’ll find say a ’04 unit for $3K and that’s only good if the accompanying mounting hardware fits your tractor, if not be ready for the additional cost. I purchased my bare bones snow blower new for $ 3,423 tax included but had to change out the hydraulic quick adapters that came with the blower to a smaller size, no way to order with the right size. 4) After the tractor purchase I looked into up-sizing the rear tires/hubs from the small AG to the larger AG tires. I read on various threads no-can-do if you have a belly mower because the deck rubs on the wider tires. 5) Proper Ballasting is a must either through wheel weights or a PTO ballast box, the tractor came with a 419 Front Loader and 4WD conditions can place undue stress on the front axles when in 4WD, there some good threads with tips on driving in reverse with heavy loads and balancing the tractor (a must read). Other than the above it is the perfect tractor for us, the low hours and the previous owner’s maintenance (fluids/filters) has it running at peak performance. Little to no smoke and the exhaust pipe is pointed downward towards the ground so this will go nicely in a residential attached garage with the front pointing to the opening door. The 419 loader was very easy to remove along with the 60 inch belly mower. The 3 retro kits for the snow blower took about 3 hours to install. however I had to purchase a good torque wrench and higher size socket set. TractorbyNet.com is really great, allot of people with vast experience in every aspect of a John Deere Compact Utility Tractor (CUT).

Pros: Easy attach front loader, mower and front mount snow blower.
Cons: Manual shift vs. HST, but for the price I'll deal with it.

790 John Deere
First Tractor
Model Year: 2001

I got the JD 790 when I bought our current property. So far we've used it for mowing, moving wood, moving snow and jump starting my car. The tractor was used - and not gently - so a lot of the issues I am experiencing it is possible that had the tractor been stored/covered these wouldn't be problems. My #1 issue with this is that the manual goes by serial number range. My tractor is in the first SN range, but requires the manual for the next batch of Serial Numbers. This made maintenance a little aggravating because it took me a while to figure out why the diagrams didn't match the underside of the tractor. Value only got three stars because green paint is apparently incredibly expensive - to the point that JD and JD accessories cost approximately twice as much as every other brand. The dealer I've worked with is horrible. I'm a woman going into a tractor store looking for parts, so the guys behind the counter do their best to convince me that I don't want that, I want this. The one time I listened to them I made a mess for myself. The 790 specifically requests Low Viscocity hydraulic fluid, the guy behind the counter convinced me I needed the regular stuff. So I got it, and put it in. Now I am going to have to change out five gallons of hydraulic fluid before winter. They also gave my husband difficulty when he wanted to buy a JD auger to put on our County Line attachment. There are also a wide variety of parts that are no longer available for this model, which makes sense because it's 10 years old. When we get the money we are going to try to sell this tractor so we can put a down payment on a New Holland.

Pros: Good for small applications.
Cons: Manual is wrong.

790 John Deere
JD 790
Model Year: 1999

My particular tractor was purchased as a package with my house and has a JD 70 loader and a Bush Hog finish mower on the back. I contacted John Deere to find the manufacture year based on the serial number. Two things I have run into with this machine: 1. The manual is available online and you are supposed to select a manual based on Serial Number. For example it will have the manual and description of the model with (000001-111111) to indicate the serial number range. My serial number falls into a manual that is not 100% applicable to my machine which is occasionally frustrating. 2. Clutch. I've been having some trouble with the clutch (I will see if it improves after all the transmission oil has been changed) and when I contacted the John Deere dealership they told me it's a common problem for the clutch to get caught on the flywheel and need to be replaced. This causes really jerky take off regardless of gear or RPMs. This is a compact/utility tractor and the model has been discontinued (now it's the 3000 series I believe). I use this machine for moving snow, moving wood, mowing several acres of field and will be using it to dig fence post holes in the spring. This machine was not well cared for prior to me getting it so I can't comment on longevity, other than to say even though this machine was not cared for well it still runs very well and I am not unhappy with the performance outside of the two instances noted above.

Pros: Size; adequate power for small applications.
Cons: Owners manual & clutch.

John Deere 790
Model Year: 2005

I bought the 790 with a front end loader and 5 foot rotary mower (bush hog). I've been extremely satisfied with the tractor. Over the years I've added a trim mower, grading blade and york rake. I own 20 acres, so the tractor is mainly used to mow pastures, but I've used it to move snow, blue stone, and brush. The only mildly negative comment is that it is a manual shift. While mowing, this is not an issue, however, if the user is going to move a lot of snow or dirt or gravel, the constant shifting while moving forward then backing up is a challenge. If you're going to do anything with a lot of back and forth movements, I suggest that you get a hydrostatic transmission. I selected this tractor with a manual transmission because of the cost and I had heard that the hydro tranny causes more maintenance expense as well as lowering the horsepower output by a few horses. Other than that, this is a wonderful utility tractor.

Pros: It's reliable, always starts & has low maintenance costs.
Cons: Low power for plowing more than a small garden.

JD 790, front loader, backhoe, 60 inch under belly mower, hydraulic bagger, plow and, box scraper.
Model Year: 2001

Very versatile machine, switching implements is very easy. Hydraulics are very weak. Out dug by a Kubota BX23. I got stuck in mud and was not able to pull the tractor with the backhoe. I bought this tractor with less than 25 hours on it. I was told that the original owner traded up to a bigger tractor. Now I see why! I could not even pull a small stump out of the ground. It would have been easier using a pick and shovel. 20 grand and I had to modify the hydraulic pumps myself. Pump pressure from factory was around 2100 PSI. I added shims to pumps and now pressure is 2500 PSI. Once pump pressure was turned up, I now have a tractor that does what it is supposed to do. Cutting grass with a 60 inch under belly mower is a breeze. Would I buy this tractor again? Probably not! Next time I will be looking at a Kubota.

Pros: Reasonably priced, cuts grass great.
Cons: Weak hydraulics.

790 John Deere
I would buy it again
Model Year: 2004

790, 4WD (mechanical front wheel assist) with 410 FEL (Front End Loader) and R4 (industrial tread) tires. The tires are the right compromise between turf and bar cleats as we use it on both lawn and rugged jobs. If you are going to buy a FEL (and I HIGHLY recommend you do), pay attention to weight on the rear end, which you will need, be it a ballast box, an implement, or wheel weights. Also, I would never use a FEL withOUT 4WD. This model has a conventional gear transmission which is proven technology and the most value per dollar. I avoided hydro due to costs. For a 1 tractor property, the 790 is a little big for some jobs, a little small for others, and just right for most jobs. If I had it to do all over, I would still buy the 790.

Pros: Very versatile, nimble, and VERY reliable. Will fit through a normal 9x7 garage door.
Cons: Traction on snow. Traction on ice is difficult for anything without chains so that's off the table here. However, traction on snow has occasionally been difficult especially on a grade. Save yourself the grief and get chains. I did need to replace one oil seal behind a brake drum which I feel it should not have occured so soon. Perhaps it was just a fluke.

790 John Deere
Reliable, Fits in tight places, More hp than others in size
Model Year: 0

I use my 790 to maintain most of 25+ acres of tree farm/ nursery. Dealer was able to narrow the rear tires to just over 48 inches wide for farming in between rows of trees with r-1 tires. Was hard to find a tractor to fit that spec with over 25 hp. Lacks the bells and whistles of other models, but that what makes it so good is the simplicity of the tractor. The dealer shimmed the hydraulic relief for better performance from the 300 loader and 3pt, and can now lift 1000 lb. bag of fertilizer with the loader enough to unload from the pick-up. The only real thing missing from the 790 for me is a reverser for easier direction changes when working with the loader.

Pros: Exellent dealer support, power and size, simplicity of tractor
Cons: No power reverser, Tight, awkward engine acces when loader is installed

The little mule
Model Year: 2001

I just recently sold this machine, and I miss it.Replaced with a 4310. Very solid machine started every time even the coldest wheather. I used it to mow five acres with a six foot Frontier finish mower. Had no problems pulling that. Tilled my garden with a five foot Frontier tiller and did it well. Used it to split wood with the Speeco splitter and the only complaint was that it was slow, no lack of power. The only problem with this tractor is the weight. I lost traction way before I lost power. Fill the tires and get chains!!! Of course the last snows we had were of epic proportions. All in all great machine. I think they will last forever if you don't mind shifting.

Pros: Plenty of power, nimble, fun to drive!
Cons: Weight
