Used John Deere 790
Model Year: 2004
Prior to purchasing this used 790 I did a good amount of research on machines that would support a 59 Inch Front Mount Snow Blower. I had owned a 1962 JD 3010 Diesel Farm Tractor with a 7’ wide brush hog and an old rear 3-PT McKee snow blower. I decided to sell the very reliable 3010 for three reasons, we purchased a smaller 14 acre wooded lot that has about 2 acres of cleared area so looked for a small tractor; as I approach retirement age I found twisting me neck for two hours using the rear pto snow blower was becoming more of a task, and lastly; the initial smoke in winter with the 3010 was overwhelming. Since purchasing the 790 I’ve learned several things which I’ll share. 1) To change all the filters and lubricants with JD Parts runs about $350.00. 2) The 59 inch snow blower requires a Mid PTO and three mounting kits to accommodate the JD59 blower, they are: JD BM21660, BM21379 and BM16855 totaling: $1,817.00. 3) Trying to figure-out the price of a new JD59 was a bit confusing, if you search on the internet you’ll find say a ’04 unit for $3K and that’s only good if the accompanying mounting hardware fits your tractor, if not be ready for the additional cost. I purchased my bare bones snow blower new for $ 3,423 tax included but had to change out the hydraulic quick adapters that came with the blower to a smaller size, no way to order with the right size. 4) After the tractor purchase I looked into up-sizing the rear tires/hubs from the small AG to the larger AG tires. I read on various threads no-can-do if you have a belly mower because the deck rubs on the wider tires. 5) Proper Ballasting is a must either through wheel weights or a PTO ballast box, the tractor came with a 419 Front Loader and 4WD conditions can place undue stress on the front axles when in 4WD, there some good threads with tips on driving in reverse with heavy loads and balancing the tractor (a must read). Other than the above it is the perfect tractor for us, the low hours and the previous owner’s maintenance (fluids/filters) has it running at peak performance. Little to no smoke and the exhaust pipe is pointed downward towards the ground so this will go nicely in a residential attached garage with the front pointing to the opening door. The 419 loader was very easy to remove along with the 60 inch belly mower. The 3 retro kits for the snow blower took about 3 hours to install. however I had to purchase a good torque wrench and higher size socket set. TractorbyNet.com is really great, allot of people with vast experience in every aspect of a John Deere Compact Utility Tractor (CUT).
Pros: Easy attach front loader, mower and front mount snow blower.
Cons: Manual shift vs. HST, but for the price I'll deal with it.
