855 John Deere
They Just Don't make Them Like This Anymore.
Model Year: 1996

These tractors are amazingly durable and last a long time. I haven't had a single issue with mine! These are perfect for the homeowner, farmette, and commercial user. When you look closely at the tractor, you'll be amazed at the engineering that went into these. I've have two 430's, a 650 and the 855. The 855 is by far the best tractor out of all of them. It has plenty of power and traction. It has always done what I've asked of it with no problems. This is the last tractor I'll purchase and this one will be passed down.

Pros: Well build, durable, nice looking, lots of options
Cons: It could use a bit more horse power

This is an absolute dream tractor for any homeowner who needs a multi purpose machine. I have had zero problems with this machine and the performance is superb. I have several implements for a variety of uses around my home including landscaping, mowing, brush clearing, snow removal and more. I would recommend this tractor to anyone.

Pros: Power, versatility, reliability
Cons: Can be unstable on hills or with lots of weight in the loade

JD 855 With 52 Loader
Model Year: 1988

Tractor is easy to operate with good location for controls, especially the loader joy stick. Tractor is great for landscaping and general yard work. Gave $5,000.00 for it and a JD brush hog, with no regrets, it far exceeds my expectations I had for it.

Pros: Easy to operate.
Cons: None.

I got this at an auction it says does not run for $1,200.00. Brought it home, clean it up, charge the battery, she started right up. Runs like a dream to date. I must add that I am not a mechanic. I just buy stuff on an impulse.

Pros: HST.
Cons: None.

Sheer bliss. This tractor has been the most reliable tool I have ever owned. For the first half of its life it was used for mowing with its 60" belly mower and snow removal for home and retail store with the front end loader snow used to be a big thing here in Pa. Not so bad the last few years though. We moved to a larger home about 10 years ago and needed to remove huge rocks sticking out of the back acre lawn. No problem with the rear blade attachment then I tackled cleaning up about an acre of overgrown wooded buffer zone the little beast tore up tree like shrubs with the tooth attachment I installed on the 60" front bucket and cleaned out all the underbrush as well without a hitch or even a burp. After 20 years it runs as well today as when I first test drove it. It's a great tractor and holds it value as well.

Pros: Reliabilty.
Cons: None I can think of.

855 John Deere
JD 855 with Loader
Model Year: 1995

Purchased this tractor over the border for 7K from an egg farmer, 3rd owner. Perfect size machine for small acreage...land is mostly trees so you can maneuver in and around quite easy. This machine has been worked and seems to be holding up quite well as it was an ex-rental. Engine seems solid and runs well. The hydro-static transmission is smooth for loader work. The front spindles are leaking gear oil a bit, significant play in steering due to worn bushings on steering cylinder. Current attachments include 4' bb, 5' rear blade for snow clearing, 6' rake (great tool), omni 3pt hitch w/hook (use mostly for choking logs), bucket bolt on forks (a must). We'll give props for kens bolt on hooks as well. Just added 2 sets of rigid industries duallys (flood front/diffusion rear) to ROPS for plowing my drive, pretty pricey but well worth it for those dark stormy nights. Run off the work light fuse. Father has a newer JD 2305 or 2505 series...I'd take mine in a heartbeat for the price/value any day of the week, his machine seems a lot smaller.

Pros: Great all around tractor for 24HP.
Cons: Needs a paint job ;).

855 John Deere
Hydrostatic Drive is Giving Trouble
Model Year: 1993

My tractor is jumping out of gear when it goes down any amount of grade and is very hard to get engaged again. It pulls fine once it engages but will not stay engaged for long. I have to move the forward and reverse pedals back and forth while shifting the range lever up and down to get it to lock in and then when it does lock in it leaps forward or backward so it is unsafe. If you have any ideas on what the problem is I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Larry

Pros: Holds it value well and is handy to use.
Cons: Transmission troubles should not happen with so little hours.

Truly Enjoy This 855
Model Year: 1998

Bought this tractor new with FEL shortly after installed a back hoe, shortly after that a 59" front snowblower. This tractor is used year round on our very small farm and on our 14 acre summer retreat. Other than it's on the second battery not one issue ever (knock on wood). All fluids are synthetic, it is always kept washed and waxed. Take care of all equipment the same way. This 855 has done all we ever ask of it and then some.

Pros: This could be a long list tops it being green and yellow.
Cons: None for me.

855 John Deere
Great 855 Deere
Model Year: 1995

Just briefly, I bought my 855 brand new from the nearest Deere dealer about 35 mile away. I looked at Ford and Kubota, but I wanted planetary gear and wet brakes and hydro. Did not get FEL or other hydraulics and don't really regret it. I live on 2.5 acres of tough grass and sand and palm trees. With a riding lawn mower, it took me over 5.5 hours to cut the grass alone [MTD w/42" deck]. I ended up cutting grass in all my spare time. This 855 saved my life. It now takes a little over one hour to do all the cutting with a 4 foot rotary mower. And the 855 is never going to wear out in my life time. I'm on my second cutter now. The 855 has turf tires turned out wide, seven suitcase weight on the front. I went through several batteries until i installed an Optima four years ago. No problems since. The only problems I've had were when the wife was driving it. She has broken a sway chain and popped a rear tire off the rim! And destroyed the sunshade, but the smile on her face while SHE is cutting grass is worth it. I can dig four nice little holes trying to push down a tree without any leverage from a FEL--all the way to the frame. The 855 burns a little over one gallon an hour regardless of what I'm doing. I put biocide in the fuel along with a little Marvel MO. and it just keeps working. It will pull the neighbor's boat and a friend's diesel pusher motor home without breathing hard. With the 855, a post hole digger, a chain and a little engineering, the wife and I put up 1500 feet of field wire fence in about 4 weekends and a couple evenings. I think the one liter Yanmar motor is the greatest thing since canned beer and has been the picture of reliability. Sadly, I don't think there is an equivalent tractor in the Deere line anymore--but I'm not looking anymore. This forum is great, thanks for having me!

Pros: Size, capability, reliability.
Cons: Could use more power, more 3 pt. lift capability.

855 John Deere
New Winter Tractor
Model Year: 1996

Cab, heat, snow plow! After a long winter (2010-2011), I wanted to be ready this year and after having 60+ton of new drive way I didn't want some one ripping it up plowing snow. Choice between a jeep or truck with a plow when I came upon the Deere 855 was no choice after that. Has worked great not a drop of snow since I parked her on the side of the house. Any interest have a late 50's cub loboy, new clutch, front tires, new paint (1 year) mower deck runs and looks great for sale.

Pros: Cap, heat, snow plow, mower deck for summer snd FEL.
Cons: Fuel gauge not working, looking for used backhoe Deere 7.
