John Deere 990
Model Year: 2004
I would rate the JD990 as an excellent value for cost and power. The 40hp Yanmar engine has been reliable and is well matched to the weight and usage of the tractor. I have the standard 430 loader and a BushHog post auger. I did replace the battery which was sulfating badly and corroding the terminals. This appears to be a common problem with this series. The industrial R4 front tires kept separating from the rim in cold weather (-20F). I heated them in the garage and applied a bead sealer all around. They have held for several years now without a problem. My usage is general summer land clearing and snow moving in the winter. I also build fence and use it to move construction materials and equipment around the property. I am happy with the shift transmission. This is probably the largest discussion area in compact tractors. Many prefer the hydrostatic drive and there are certainly advantages to it. In my case, I preferred the 40hp engine and saved some $$ by choosing the standard shift. I didn't perceive a speed advantage and my wife doesn't drive it, plus I'm not using it to make money. The 3 speed trans coupled with the 3 speed ranges provides enough gearing to get any job done. Many times I would prefer a faster reverse, without changing ranges, but this is a small consideration.
Pros: Simple 40Hp tractor - relative low cost
Cons: No Cab, Factory battery troublesome.
