Hi,
New member here. I volunteer to help maintain equipment at a local community supported agriculture (CSA) project in New Paltz NY. They have a 8000 series Cub tractor that has lost it's PTO output. The farmer said he hit something (rock?) while tilling and lost the PTO output.

I am ordering a service manual as the owners manual gives no information on the PTO. Is there somewhere I can look to try and get this working again? Fuses seem ok, as do the switches and I can't find a shear pin or anything along those lines. . . I appreciate any information you can provide me.

Clueless in New York,

Jeff

Cub Cadet lists two (2) models in the 8000 series. 1.) 8354 and 2.) 8454. Determine which of the two you have and then go to this Cub Cadet Cadet Web Site.

Enter the model number and review a breakdown of the parts involved in the rear and mid PTO's. Good luck on repairs. Looks involved from the diagrams provided by Cub Cadet.

Thanks for the lead - and yes, it looks rather involved.

Too bad they didn't have a friendly and easily replaced shear pin in there somewhere. . .

Guess I found one of my winter projects.

The tiller itself should have a slip clutch to prevent damage to the tractors PTO. I would be looking into that to see why it broke the tractor instead of slipping.

Had one do this a couple of years ago. Split tractor found snap ring that holds the clutch together came off. Not a bad job but I would not run it much without checking if thats it because you could have the loose parts do other damage.

DK35 can confirm but those are the two models of tractor, that are essentially a Kioti DK35 and DK45. If you have a Kioti dealer anywhere around you you could check with them as well. They are rebadged as Cubs in the White and Yellow colors.

Ditto that. They did also have the 8404 model for a year or two and it was a rebadged DK40. Any good Kioti dealer will have more knowledge on those than a Cub dealer probably will. Not that the Cub dealers are bad, but they only sold those a few years and not in huge numbers. I guess they may still be selling if the inventory is not gone yet.

Hi,
Yes, the farm has a 8454. How difficult do you think the repair to the PTO shaft (assuming it's a sleeve or as 7254t suggests - a snap ring) is? I am a former army mechanic, who used to work on my own car. I am fine following a manual - but don't have every tool under the moon.

Thoughts as I approach this?

THanks,

Jeff
