The past weekend I missed a good buy. A local dealer had a 2006 Dodge 2500 Big Horn 4x4 diesel with the 4doors with 32k miles. The starting price was 24,500 and it was in mint condition. It was gone on Monday. The dealer across the street has a similar 2006 Dodge 2500 with 20k miles and the starting price is $31,500. What do you think is a good cash price ? The dealership is Dominion Dodge in Salem, VA. I don't know the exact web address but they have the vehicle on the internet and it has been on the lot for about 2 months.

Thanks in advance

Sounds high to me- a local Dodge dealer has been selling new trucks at $9,000 BELOW invoice! Right now it is a buyers market due to fuel prices.

Just after I typed the above the same dealer just came on tv with new fullsize pickups at half price.

Todd,

A good cash price would to me be in the mid 20's with the way things are in diesel world now. The only problem with this tactic is that those who are in the market for a diesel pickup like those mentioned will buy what they need almost without regard to the economy, and fuel costs have very little impact. Thankfully, most of these will buy new, and you are looking at a vehicle that is essentially new but has already taken initial depreciation which is even more exaggerated in diesel because they lose so little value later on. I would offer 25-26,000 for it and see what happens. You might get lucky on this one.

I bought brand new, a 2006 Dodge Laramie 4x4, 4-door diesel, with just about everything but I have the 6 speed stick. It cost me $32,688 OTD. I think that a 2+year old truck should not cost you $31K. Check with CarMax and see what they would pay to buy one from a seller as well as what they would sell one to a buyer for. That will tell you the selling and buying price for wholesale and retail.

There is an $8000 rebate right now on new 2008s. A local dealer is selling for $12,000 below MSRP right now. I'm on my second Dodge truck and I love them! Too bad the rebate didn't apply to the Challenger because I'm in love with that car!

Well once again thanks for the advice from the people on this forum. I left this morning and stopped at the dealership I mentioned above and I drove the truck. I was told it came from Michigan and an executive from Dodge had it. I noticed a lot of surface rust on the bolts under the truck and the engine parts had rust. The dealer said he would let me buy it for 27k.

I left and drove to the largest dealership on my side of the state. This dealer carries all of the major brands on a 60 acre lot. I pulled into the Dodge lot and I saw an 08 with a 6spd manuel for $32,600. The salesman came out and asked what I was looking for. He drove me around the entire dealership and i looked at 50 used diesel trucks. I saw an 07 Chevy 4dr with the Allison and duramax with 9,500 miles. The asking price was 35k which was more than I could put into a truck. My salesman told me I could get it for 29k-30k.

We then went back to his office and he searched the entire lot and he found that a 07 Dodge had been traded the night before. He said the truck was in detail or in the garage. We spent 20 minutes looking for the truck. We found it on the lift with all wheels off. He got permission for me to go into the garage area and look at the truck. I even got to talk to all the diesel mechanics from all the brands. I was impressed. The truck was in great shape. The mechanic said the truck had a 5.9 cummins and the truck was an early 07 before the change to the 6.7. The truck still had dirt on it from the trade. I spent the next few hours driving trucks until the mechanic was done with his inspection and lunch. I felt this was a great selling point allowing me to talk to the people who work on all of the brands.

After spending the day driving trucks, the salesman let me work up offers on three trucks. I looked at the Chevy, a new Dodge, and the one I saw in the garage. I bought the 07 Dodge crew cab with the 5.9 cummins with 17k miles OTD for 26K. The funny thing is that a coworker, Troy came down to the lot and he traded his Nissan Frontier in on a new 1500 Dodge Crew cab with the same salesman. I'm tickled to death. I got 19mpg on the way home to my house, which means a lot to me since I live out in the country. If anyone ever need to buy a truck, please, look at Shelor Motor Mile in Christiansburg, VA.

You did your homework and you did good!! Great deal there; saving over new, got the good engine without all that smog crapola, got the 6 speed, barely broke in engine too. So tell us what are you going to tow with it? What are all the options that came on it? One thing I sure wish I would have gotten was the limited slip rear end. I figured that I could find a better aftermarket unit, but near as I can tell, no one makes one even today for my '06! I love my dodge cummins 4door 4x4. It's the smoothest running truck I've ever owned. Go check out a website called turbo diesel register. It's for Dodge diesel truck owners exclusively and then go check out Geno's Garage. Lots of good stuff for your dodge truck. Especially the extra cup holder/tray that puts your coffee cup up and not down by the shifter. What kind of warranty did you get as well? Enjoy that truck and enjoy joining a new forum; first for tractors, now another for that truck. Cheers!!

Skipro3,

My truck has an automatic and it is a SLT with two tone paint (blue and silver) It has power seats, sliding glass, cloth interior, overhead display, and upgraded radio system. I believe it has hte limited slip, but I not certain. My Silverado has the limited slip and I noticed the Dodge started spinning when coming up the last grade on the the gravel road to my house and I felt the dif lock.

I bought the truck because I was tired of trying to get my kids out of my Silverado xtracab and because I tow my TC 40A 4-5 times per year on an old country road in the mountains. I will take a few pics tomorrow in the daylight. I didn't plan it, but the color on my new truck almost matches my NH tractor. I got 90 days of warranty from the dealer, but the Dodge warranty from 07 is still covering everything including the 5 year 100K cummins warranty.

Shelor has always been good on price but lacking in service. I live about 6-7 miles from their dealership.

I buy vehicles from where ever i get the best price (large dealers that want to get rid of vehicles older than 4 years cheap, because they want to show brand new, and young trade ) and get service from.... whatever small independent auto shop has the best service for the best price !
