Curious what the going rate for a bushel of tomatoes is out there?

We have already put away enough for us and given away hundreds of pounds to our friends. Thinking about trying to sell whats left as opposed to fertilizing the compost heap.

I see them in the store for $2.50/lb individually, but that seems pretty steep for bulk as a bushel is 53 lbs if memory serves.

(note to self: 44 tomato plants may be too much for two people!)

road side produce stands are $2+ per lb round hear. Didnt cost me any more this year than it did any of the other years to plant my garden, but i guess everyone figures if your going to pay that in the store, you might as well pay that at the local produce stand.

as my garden is so late this year, the tomato's have been slim around my place. I have plenty of green ones on the vines now, so by winter ill have enough put up, just havnt enjoyed fresh tomato's in july like we have in the past.

as for number of plants... i like a variety of plants, i usually shoot for about 6 of about 6 diffrent kinds. Not all of them make it, and not all of them produce well so in the past its worked out for us.

next years crop may not be like this year. you can always give them away, sell them, can them etc...

i am selling tomatoes at the farmers market for $2.50/lb. One variety i grow is san marzanos which are like romas. when i sell a half bushel or more to one customer i will sell them for $1.50/lb. a bushel of tomatoes is 40 lbs.
i grew 350 plants this year. I'm sorry I didn't grow 500 plants.

If you have a lot of green tomatoes left, they make wonderful green tomato relish. Use the same recipy you would for regular relish but substitute the tomatoes for the cucumbers.
