Read elsewhere that MTD is using the Allis name again on a line of Lawn Mowers, basically redone Simplicity models (which they were in the past).
Hopefully this will resurrect Allis!

Simplicity, which owns the Allis-Chalmers lawn & garden equipment rights, logo, etc., is now owned by Briggs & Stratton. Simplicity also makes the Massey-Ferguson L&G equipment, in addition to owning Snapper.

The Allis-Chalmers is a Simplicity-designed machine, manufactured in the Snapper plant in Georgia. They'll be sold initially through Simplicity dealers. There is NO connection to MTD.

MTD = Cub Cadet, not Simplicity...

News Release
ALLIS-CHALMERS HERITAGE REBORN WITH NEW LAWN TRACTOR FROM BRIGGS & STRATTON

For Immediate Release

Milwaukee, Wis., (August 18, 2008)裕he Briggs & Stratton Yard Power Products group is restoring the Allis-Chalmers brand to the lawn & garden industry with two new lawn tractors. Available at Simplicity dealerships beginning this fall, the new tractors harken back to the glory days of the Allis-Chalmers farm tractor.
Allis-Chalmers first entered the farm equipment business in 1914 and, over the next 75 years, the company was responsible for many innovations in the farm equipment industry. Its distinctive orange tractors became a mainstay on farms across America and the Allis-Chalmers name is fondly remembered by many generations. The design of the new AC130 lawn tractor is reminiscent of these products, leaning heavily on the familiar orange color and distinctive Allis-Chalmers logo.

The AC130 model will be available in two versions: a 23-hp unit with 42 mowing deck and a 24-hp tractor with a 46 mowing deck. Both lawn tractors will feature a Briggs & Stratton Extended Life Series V-Twin engine with spin-on oil filter, advanced debris management system and full pressure lubrication. Other product highlights include single pedal foot-controlled hydrostatic transmission, cruise control, a cast-iron front axle, and a tight 14 turning radius.

The new 23-hp AC130 retails for approximately $1799.00; the 24-hp unit retails for approximately $1999.00. Sale prices vary by dealer. For more information about this new Allis-Chalmers lawn tractor or to locate the nearest Simplicity lawn & garden dealership, visit www.allischalmerslawn.com.

Nice to see the name come back, but I gotta wonder why in blue thunder do they need 23 HP for a 42" deck?????

It's a lawn tractor (i.e. lawn mower) designed to sell for less than $2000 -- compare it to the John Deere machines at Home Depot, and I think you'll understand the target...

HP sells, just like "cast iron" front axles (even though the steel axles on the older Simplicity machines was actually stronger and more durable, IMO)...

I'd imagine that kind of horsepower is to support mulching, which DOES take more power since you're chopping the same clippings several times, rather than just discharging them...

I think Joe and Kent are both right. But I mean.......23 HP for a 42-in. deck! I know mulching take more HP, but my JD Z425 has the same HP briggs on a 48-in. deck, and, it drives a power flow bagger fan. That soaks the HP, but it's still plenty on my mower, although I must say I have no hills to negotiate. Hp does sell, and they probably got a good deal on those Briggs models for production purposes. There was a thread on another forum discussing the year old class action suit, filed against the small engine mfrs in the outdoor power industry, for exaggerating HP figures. Maybe those aren't "realistic" HP figures??? Regardless, my old '87 MTD (Wards) cut tall grass just fine with a 11-HP Tecumseh and a 38-in. deck (not that much smaller deck). Hmmmm....

yeah, they obviously know their market and as much as i dislike mtd products, some of the old buggars can sure cut some grass and can last for a long time........

BUT, for me, i still rather buy a used quality mower than a new More Trash from Detroit.......old saying we use to use when i worked at a troybilt dealership.....

Why bring back the AC name only to put it on an entry level lawn mower? I hope they are going to go somewhere more with the AC name and release an entire line similar to Cub Cadet and John Deere where they have entry level mowers on up to high quality garden tractors.

It is nice to see the name and logo again though

I also wonder why in blue blazes would you want or need 20+ HP in a LAWN tractor made just for cutting grass? I'll guarantee you a 35+ year old 8 HP Deere 110 in good condition would out pull that "new" Briggs-and-Stratton-Allis-Chalmers or whatever it is any day. They just keep sticking bigger numbers on these small engines to make them appear more powerful, it's a fact. If you can see the manufacturer's average HP rating rather than maximum peak HP ratings for the engines that they stick on them now, the figures are more realistic. Generally speaking, subtact about 25% from the engine manufacturer rating, and you are close to the engine's actual average HP or the (more honest) way they used to rate the engines in the old days.
