hello,

i am a new member i had jrecently purchased my first john deere a 08' 2520
i have visited this site and learned many things about the model. i do have a couple questions i am curious about. i have 24hrs. on it
1. upon start up after sitting a day throttle at half i get a lot of blue smoke. enough to fill my garage is this common? it goes away within 30 seconds and if shut off and restarted it does not smoke. the next day the same thing.

2. how reliable is the final drive on these rather than a straight axle? is there any problems with these from stress from 3 pt. no problems here just curious.

thank you for any feedback and if theres anything to look out for i would love to know by the way my 3 pt arms were upgrade after the first use of 3pt.

#1, Smoky start up is common with diesels, although I suspect yours will get worse if you continue to start at half throttle.

Any reason your doing this ?

Have you tried starting at lowest throttle setting ?

I don't know if it's half or one third or what, but the owner's manual for the 2520 specifies a throttle setting for start-up and it is definitely not idle.

(1)I always start mine at idle, and there's just an initial puff of smoke which clears away within seconds.
(2)Haven't heard of any problems or complaints with the rear axle. Many have written of the use of 1000lb plus ballast boxes without incident. I move my 8000lb travel trailer around my property without difficulty using the 3pt.

Wow, it's not. I just looked it up. Would you believe 1/2 to 3/4 ! That's just plain dumb.

Starting Procedure

Sorry JD2520, I stand corrected. I was wrong.

So out of curiosity, I looked up my 790 starting procedure.

Kinda surprised that it said 1/3 to 1/2.

I don't care, I'll continue to start at idle. I'll bet dollars to donuts it's doing less harm.

yes the manual states 1/2 throttle start which is what i do so is the thick initial smoke normal?

Yeah, at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle cold mine smokes like crazy and coughs, but at just above idle it lets out a single small puff of smoke and purrs like a tiger waking up!

It wouldn't be the first thing that was wrong in the manual. Over the weekend I changed engine oil for the first time. Wow, the manual was off by almost a quart. Then I was all geared up to change the hydro oil and filter too, but one look thru the manual and I knew I needed more info before tackling it. All the pics were of some other model tractor, and the text wasn't of much help either. Today I printed the latest on-line version, it looks a lot better.
