Tractors on the road and liability

No registration required in Connecticut.

I would definately make sure I had a SMV sign on the rear along with flashers and at least liability insurance coverage.

DOAG: Connecticut Motor Vehicle Farm License Plates

Farm Tractors
Registration of farm (agricultural) tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment is not required. Farm tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment may not be used on public roads for transporting good for hire (transporting products of others for pay or for other commercial purposes. When operating on a public road at speeds less than the posted speed limit, the driver of a farm tractor or self-propelled agricultural equipment must yield to vehicles approaching from behind. Farm tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment not designed or employed in general highway transportation are not permitted on limited access highways.

The OP's question deals with a tractor that is not used for farming. It's a construction tractor and therefore may not be entitled to the same exemptions given to farm tractors.

I asked the D.O.T. officer that had a tractor trailer pulled over at the weigh station a couple weeks ago. The weights and measure people that operate the actual scale told me they knew nothing, to ask him. He told me that I was ok as long as I was going from a property owned by me to another property owned by me (I got the impression leased/rental was ok) and the distance was under 10 miles. Anything over that and I would have to have it trailered. Since my Ford is 13'6" wide, trailering it runs into a whole new hornets nest.
This is a Florida D.O.T officer, so take that into consideration.

I think that kind of reinforces my thoughts on it being OK for farmers since they commonly own disjointed parcels of land. My guess is industrial tractors do not enjoy this exemption.

You running rear duals ?

Yes, his 7710 has duals as well as a boom mower so the duals help with stability more then anything with his tractor.

David, did you ever get your 7710 split or is it still in waiting?

For Oregon residents, a PDF of the vehicle code is available at Oregon DMV 2007 Vehicle Code Book
Search for "Farm Tractor" and you'll find many exceptions to the requirements for other vehicles. There are sections under lights, insurance, registration, etc.

Since I'm not a lawyer I can't advise anyone but the information is interesting.

First thing it does is differentiate between a tractor for farm use and otherwise. I believe that the farmers have had (deservedly) friends in the legislature.

801.265 "Farm tractor." Farm tractor
means a motor vehicle designed and used
primarily in agricultural operations for
drawing or operating other farm machines,
equipment and implements of husbandry.

805.090 Nonfarm tractors. (1) Except
where specific provisions are made for tractors
described in this section, such tractors
are subject to the same provisions of the vehicle
code relating to registration, titling,
transfer, sale and dealer regulation as a motor
truck.

(2) This section applies to vehicles that
would be farm tractors if used primarily in
agricultural operations and that are not
within:
(a) The exemptions from registration for
farm tractors under ORS 803.305; or
(b) The classification of fixed load vehicle.

I believe they do around here as I've never seen one with license plates.

"One" what? Ag tractor or industrial tractor?

I can get a license plate & registration for my b/h in PA.

Why the big letters? I see 20/20 and comprehend pretty well, too. :D
