Hey Rox, what can you tell me about olive oil?

Rox,
Is it possible for you to ship to Alabama? My wife loves cooking with Olive Oil and I'd like for her to have the "best"!

How much do you get for a bottle of your favorite oil? If it's not too expensive, I'd like to get 4 or so. Is this possible?

Podunk

Podunk- Why thanks very much. i think this year my favorite favorite is the AOC. Then I think flollowed by the Bouteillan and thisclose to the Bouteillan the Grossane. The AOC which is the blended oil is very very good and the Bouteillan has a very unique floral ruity taste to it. I am anxious to see how the oil is going to taste this year. I am sorry that it is on the higher end of the price line but it is right in therre on price with top premium olive oils. People have a tendency to only want to use it on salads and fresh food but I'll tell you this, if you sautee a chicken breast in the AOC olive oil it will taste better than any chicken breast you ever had. Cook it over a medium high heat. You will taste the difference.

WOW!
That's a lot of info. Thanks, Rox.

And I'll definitely second the recommendation about cooking chicken breast in olive oil. Pure heaven.

My favorite recipe:

  • 2 servings skinless boneless chicken breast
  • soak chicken in brine (1 qt water + 1/4 cup salt) ~ 1 hour
  • drain brine, coat liberally with EVOO
  • a dash of fresh ground black pepper on both sides
  • let sit ~ 30 minutes
  • grill over medium / low heat.
Works great with steak and pork chops also.

This will produce possibly the most tender and juicy meat you will ever have.
Try it!

Rox I very much enjoyed your explanations about high quality olive oil production. You are absolutely right that every producer, country, and region claims their oil to be the best! I appreciate the pride that smaller growers/producers have for their product and think it goes beyond the obvious commercial self interest of the big exporter/importers. That being said, I also think that when cooking food of a particular region it's often good to use other ingredients from the same region. It kind of goes back to that terroir thing and products that grow together often taste good together. Without a doubt some of the best olive oil I have tasted was in France and I did bring some home with me - keep the souvenir T-shirts, I'll take the oil! I hope some day I'll have the opportunity to taste some of your Mas des Bories, hopefully near the source.

Froglick, you are welcome to come over any time. We are always here. i agree wiht what you wrote.

Okay Rox, I just placed an order through iGourmet for a bottle of your AOC and Bouteillan and another French one just to round out the order. Can't wait to get them and begin the tasting but I bet they would be even better in Provence. Be careful what you offer - you might find me on your door step one day!

Rox, thank you for the long explanation. It is clear you love the subject and you know a lot about it, I am gonna buy some of your oil and train my tongue now:)

Is it possible to press your own olives? After reading all about the mill problems, I think it is a logical step to incorporate the final production step in your own process. My 0.002 only, of course :D

czechsonofagun- I have my fingers crossed that you will like it. Many thanks for giving it a try.

We are very excited that we now have a distributor in Canada. Well he hasn't got the oil yet but soon he will after the next harvest.
Virgin Coast > Products > Main
We didn't have any distribution in Canada before so this is quite exciting for us.

Plus my cousin got us a new dealer in Florida. In Florida there is a comapny that does private home wine tastings. Tampa Wine :: Wine Tasting :: Wine Dinners :: Wine Events :: Wine Education :: Vintage Wines :: Cabernet :: pino grigio :: cabernet sauvignon :: burgundy :: chardonnay :: zinfandel :: merlot :: wine :: wine gifts :: Kadarka :: Kadarka florida :: Kada We are pretty certain that they will soon be giving tastings of our olive oil and also stock it for sale. The owner wants to do it but is nervous about it as he does not have the experience in olive oils. Lucky him my cousin hooked him up right away with us so he will be starting at the top of the producers (well I like to think so any way) The Canadian deal is a done deal and the Florida deal is almost done.

Did I mention how antsy my husband and i are about bringin in the harvest? We look at our trees all day long, kind of "longing" kind of willing the olives to mature.

A mill is defanately in the plans. I would say we are about 3 to 4 years away. This harvest which we sell in 2009 will be the year we finally pay my parents back the balance of the $65,000 they loaned us to by the place. The dollar kept sinking after we made our offer to purchase and before we closed so we kept having to come up with buckets and buckets of more dollars in order to buy the farm in Euros. It will have taken five years to have paid them back and after that we are planning on installing a mill. We ahve the room we have the location and are doing research on this so when we are ready we can run with it.

One day we will give the farm to our son and we will keep the mill. The farm really does not provide the revenue for 2 families but by having a mill my husband and I can live off the mill revenue and our son the farm revenue. I hve very specific ideas about the mill and I think we will be able to start small and then build up. We still have plans and ideas for our little business. We do want to keep it small enough so that we can run it without it running us if you know what I mean. A mill is an ideal business for retired people as you only work a couple months a year.

I hope everybody likes their olive oil thanks for giving us a try.
