I just picked up a ford 1900 without much history of the machine. I replaced the filters and ordered new glow plugs. The plugs had a pinhole in each one i suppose from overheating the plugs. My dilemma is that it doesent have a starter. Before i invest in a replacement i would like to see if the machine can run. Im thinking of pulling it with another tractor to get it moving and try to pop the clutch. Will this work? I had the fuel tank off(water in tank) and air filter assembly. How do i bleed the fuel it while pulling? Any suggestions on getting her up and running? Thanks

Because of the high stress on the drive line, Ford does not recommend tractors be push or pull started. Especially by "popping the clutch". If I HAD to do it, I'd start off in high gear with the clutch out. But... this is NOT a recommendation. ;)

I don't know if the 1900 has the hollow pivot pin in the front axle but if it does, you can pull the glow plugs (relieve compression) and turn the engine over by the front crank pulley nut. Place a socket on the front pulley nut then inserted a long extension through the pivot pin and turn with a ratchet or breaker bar. Or a 1/2" drill if you have one. This will pump enough fuel to bleed the pump and injector lines. The fuel filter assembly should have a gravity-bleed screw but if it doesn't, bleed at the pump inlet or the pump's bleed screw. Bleed the injector lines next--At the injector. This process will take two people. One to crank while the other bleeds.

Bleed the filter and pump first. Then pull it in high gear with the injector lines loose at the injector ends until clear fuel is present. Tighten the lines, pull start the 1900 using the glowplugs for 40-60 seconds. No worries about pull starting this tractor in a normal manner.

I used to have a 1900 and this sounds pretty good.

I have not had the opportunity to try this out but, I know it is pretty to easy to raise the rear axle off the ground on two jack stand on 1700 or 1900. I wondered if one could put the transmission in the highest gear, clutch out, raised on jack stand, glow plugs loosened enough to bleed compression and turn the rear wheel by hand or some mechanical advantage. I don't reckon that
a 2 cylinder engine is too difficult to turn. That should allow the timing gear/injector pump gear to turn enough to bleed the air in the fuel system up to loosened injector. Once I get the system bled I put all back and try to pull start it at the highest gear making sure I run the glow plug enough to get the glow plug indicator good and red.
