After 4 years and 450 hours, my PTO started disengaging while mowing this morning. It will still engage without issue and mow for approximately a minute. As I move into an area where the torque demand on the 5' rotary cutter increases, the PTO engage lever backs out about 1.5" and the cutter stops. There is not really any sound when it happens, and if I watch the lever it backs out fairly smoothly.

I thought the engagement might not be sufficient so I adjusted the linkage to engage the PTO slightly further, but the problem continued without change.

Have you checked for any detent mechanism that holds the PTO lever in it's position ?

You will probably find that teeth on the 2 engaging gears are starting to chip away. You can still engage it ok, but when you load it, the wear allows the gears to disengage. You can look at these gears by removing the three-point topcover and looking inside at the gears.

I have a TC33D and the same thing happen to me within the first year of owning the tractor. It was so bad that I would have to hold the PTO shift down to keep it engaged. I brought it to the dealer and it was still under warranty at the time. They replace the gears and all the hydro oil because of the metal shavings, the oil is not covered by the warranty.

It is a problem that needs to be repaired as soon as possible. The metal is wearing away and is getting into your Hydro fluids and it can cause problems in other areas.

Hope that helps
