I was clearing some land with bushhog and grapple and heard a very loud snap that did not sound like a limb snapping. Then I saw a hydraulic geyser up front. The top cylinder that works the curling part for the bucket had snapped the rod in half.

I have no idea how that happened. I was pulling on a rather large vine at the time. The bracket that the rod attaches too was bent and thats what prolly put the pressure on the rod, but man, that's about a 1 inch rod, and that bracket was pretty darn thick metal too...can't figure out how it happened. May have bent the bracket knocking down a tree a few minutes (or seconds) earlier and the rod couldn't come out of the cylinder right so it just snapped it.

But have have been working the snot outta that thing lately, so I reckon stuff does break :) Took it off and dropped it off at the local hydraulic shop to get it rebuilt this afternoon.

Bummer. This is the first time I've heard of that on a TBN post. I hope the repair works out.

How were you using the loader when pushing on the tree earlier. Were you pushing or pulling? I've heard that back dragging with an FEL puts unusual amounts of stress on loader hydraulics but hadn't heard of this type of misadventure before.

I was just pushing on the trees. But then there are some large vines (6-7 in diamiter) that I wouold grab with the grapple and pull backwards to pull them down from the tress as they are obviously grown up and entangled.

I have done some pulling on things with the grapple, pulled the grapple off of the tractor a few times. Not recommended...tends to break hoses and connectors when the grapple falls

And that woods bush hog will cut down about anything. I've been chewing up 6 in diameter pines with it. It is incredible. The slip clutch is great, I'm sure I would have broken a few hundred pins by now had I gone that route.

I've never pulled a 6 inch vine but I've pulled a lot of 2-3 inch vines that were strong enough to cause me to give up after losing traction while pulling. No ill effects.

It will be interesting to see what they hydraulic shop says after they've disassembled the thing.

Curly,

What are you doing down there? Well, if that rod is about an inch, it's probably 25mm. I believe those Kioti cylinders are metric. Look on this website, Bailey Hydraulic Cylinders Manufacturer, they have metric rod blanks. This will let you know what the rod costs per inch, then the machining, then of course seals which cost under 20 bucks aftermarket. Stop breaking stuff, will you?

I just talked to Chip and I think he said the rod was 1 1/4...could be wrong. He machine everything there...has the largest lathe I've ever seen in my life.

Hey, I'm plenty happy NOT breaking stuff. I was making some good progress on an area that we can see from our porch and had to quit. Didn't get to do any tractoring yesterday, but I did run a lot or errands.

I got a Millermatic 212 on it's way to my house so I went and bought some argon/co2 and other misc welding stuff. I bought a $1500 welder (can't weld yet) so I could weld 2 hooks on my bucket:eek: But 15 years ago I bought a $600 mitre saw to build a $8 bird house :D. I have probably made thousands of cuts on that saw since then though so it has more than paid off. And I've accumulated a shop full of woodworking tools because of that first saw. If I can get interested in welding liike I did woodworking it will turn into a very worthwile tool for me.

This sounds like the disease that affects most TBN'ers, with no known cure!! :D

I wonder if I need a plasma cutter to go with that welder :D
