My John Deere GT 262 Mower is not charging correctly. I replaced the battery however it still does not seem to be charging the battery sufficiently. Ideas anyone?

I know I'm late to the party here, but I had the same problem with my GT262 (charge light came on out of the blue). The John Deer Manual that I bought has a trouble shooting check for the charging light coming on and it's pretty good. I wend through all the checks (basically battery voltage back to the regulator) and that was fine. I then did the ignition on checks (not running) and came to battery voltage out the brown wire (center on plug there were 2) which indicated a bad regulator. However, I noticed the regulator connector was filthy so I gave it a good cleaning. It looked like some kind of orange goopy mess, which I did not find on the regulator (just the connector). After cleaning the connectors both sides I plugged it together and the charging light didn't come on.
For once it was something simple & cheap. Kudos to the John Deere manual for a great trouble shooting diagnostic step list. Not often found these days, granted it's from the 90s, still continue to be impressed by this GT recommended by folks on this forum. Just thought I'd share in case someone comes accross this problem like I did and this might be their solution.
