FWJ and Oleoz, if you don't mind saying what is the approx. cost for the overhaul on the 1066. and will it take to put a motor back in the 4440?

chh---The price will be around $3,000, the mechanic told me they will have between 40-50 hrs in it until it's finished. That price is barring any unforseen expenses. He is also going to take a look at the TA but any serious work on that means a big expense because the tractor has to be torn apart even more.

I keep having flash backs to when my 7710 went down. I wish you the best and hopefully the cost doesn't skyrocket.

Yes Robert, I've thought about the problems you had with the 7710.
If the cost does skyrocket then I will just have to let it sit until I can gather up the money to get it fixed.
My neighbor has offered me the use of his 1086 while mine is down, this from a man who only has one decent working tractor on his farm. Needless to say I couldn't ask for a better person living down the road. I thanked him but told him I could live without the old beast for a couple weeks.

Waiting on a complete quote from Deere dealer, but a quick "off the cuff" wild ballpark guess by service manager was around $8000 for a new "crate motor" installed. Add for new clutch, tranny service (QuadRange) hydraulic pump rebuild while it's apart, and the total bill, purchase price of tractor included could be close to $20,000. It'd be a VERY nice $22,000 to $25,000 tractor that would do anything that a new 130 hp tractor would do. Still weighing options at this point.

A bit of good news this morning. The mechanic called and said he had checked the TA as I had asked him to, the folks who owned it before said it was slipping a bit. There is a 3 inch long spring and if it gets stretched can cause slippage, the spring was about a half inch longer than what it should have been, he replaced it and now shifts well again.
The TA is a big deal when you go to buy or sell one of these old IH's. They are always mentioned in the ads as good TA, or just replaced, or not working. I never used it much but the mechanic said once I start using the TA I'll be glad that I have it.
Tonight he drops the oil pan and checks for antifreeze.

Glad to hear the good news on the IH. You should have yourself a fine tractor for many years to come when he gets her done. 4440 JD's were always one of my favorites, and that is what I would look for if I had a need of a 2wd tractor of that size. I borrowed one from a buddy once to yank my old Ford out of the mud, and was that ever a sweet machine. He traded that one in last year on a new 4wd.

Well the saga continues. Stopped this morning to talk to the mechanic, the cavitation leak is in the No. 2 cylinder. He also had removed a rod bearing and showed me what it looked like. It is worn down to the copper(brass?) base. He had planned on replacing the main and rod bearings but now feels as though he should pull the engine out, send the block away and have the crankshaft ground down and will then put in oversize pistons. He said he had never seen rod bearings worn to that point, he felt improper maintenance, probably the oil not being changed at the proper intervals.
Looks like I picked a winner when I bought that tractor but I don't want him to do half a job and regret it later and I do trust the mechanic. He showed me an old block out of a JD that he had rebuilt and I could easily see the differences between that motor and mine.

wow 5000 for a 1066 and surprised it had a problem?
I would expect all kinds of problems buying at that price. Can't even get a decent 806 for that.

Not sure where you got the idea I paid $5000 for a 1066, I never mentioned that price.
