Early Power Shift Tractors

This isn't going against anyone's prior posts, it's for information only. I was just looking through the new Deere lineup of tractors and they are going to change the model numbering system. One nice thing they did was explain from here on out how they are going to list HP. I copied and pasted this section below from the site.

"The second position is the tractor's engine horsepower. John Deere has promoted PTO horsepower for its utility and row-crop tractors and engine horsepower for its 4WD tractors. This has lead to some confusion in the marketplace. Although promoting PTO horsepower has its benefits, using bare-engine horsepower allows for a more consistent means of promoting tractor horsepower in a global market. Bare-engine horsepower is measured by running just the bare block engine with the front fan. With "bare" engine horsepower, John Deere is using the International Organization for Standardization 97/68 E-C standard for determining the bare-engine horsepower at rated engine speed, given in metric horsepower, not SAE. This unit of measurement is used globally to describe off-road engines. This will allow John Deere to consistently promote the tractor's horsepower within the model number across all tractors around the world."

So now it's metric hp not SAE hp. Not a big deal since 1 SAE hp = 1.0138697 metric hp, i.e. less than 1.4% difference between the two. Well, maybe I'm being hasty since that difference may make a difference so some folks. We'll see.

I've never heard of a metric hp, usually we use kilowatts for metric expression of power. I'll have to look it up.

JasG, i checked last night, and in the test report i quoted, the power was measured from the drawbar, not from the rear axle directly, so it involves the effects of mass inertia and tire resistance in the final outcome.

what years did Deere use the 8spd PS?

Charlie175:

Actually your question was who was able to get it to work.

Caterpillar - Dozers, some ag products

ZF - Makes drivetrain parts including transmissions for OEM's, I think mosty in construction equipment.

Funk - Makes Transmissions for OEM's still does, but now is owned by Deere. Customers are many, Ford/New Holland, McCormick, Agco, Massey Ferguson, Bulher and many more. I don't know if New Holland still uses them since they went with the T-series a few years ago.

International Harvester (They had the transmission done before being bought by JI Case)

I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I know of.

Don't think MF (AGCO) uses Funk anymore. GIMA (Joint venture between MF & Renault) for the powershifts, and Germany for the Vario (Fendt.)

MF used the Funk powershift untill recently, but i think you're right and they're using only the vario in the big 8000 models right now... What does Buhler use, also a Funk ?

I don't know about now, but Buhler was using Funk.
