Looked at new tractor today, looking to replace my open Kubota L4200 with a cab tractor. The price on this model is almost too good to pass up. The fit and finish appeared to be nice. The ENGINE however, seemed really loud(even with the cab closed). Also it didn't seem nearly as smooth running(more vibration) as my 4 cylinder. (especially at lower rpms) Is this typical for this motor. I also looked at an open cab 58hp tractor(I think)with the 4cylinder mitsubishi and it seemed more like my Kubota in regards to smoothness and sound level. The dealer didn't have any smaller cab tractors on hand, but said they'd be within 2 thousand dollars of this one. If these john deere motors are all loud , with a little vibration at low rpm I guess I could still wear my headphones off my kubota and still have heat and air. I just don't want to start off with a bad motor. Sorry for the long-winded post.

Mine T7074 is somewhat louder than my MF 5455 inside the cab. I really kind of expected that since it costs about 1/2 as much. That said I really have not noticed any unusual vibration in my tractor. There is some normal diesel vibration at idle, but it smooths out and stays smooth after you bring the rpm's up just a bit of off idle. So far I have found it to be a comfortable tractor to run. I am not a big JD fan to say the least, but this seems to be a good engine.

Thanks CHH, I kind of think this must be normal, it did smooth out just off idle. I wonder if one could add a muffler without restricting too much exhaust flow. I'm still not decided . I can get a 43 horse Kubota cab with hst and fel for slightly less. I do have a local kubota dealer, but I haven't been impressed with their service department in the past. The Montana is really more tractor than I need , but I figure it would be easier on the drivetrain on the bigger tractor. The only exception would be mowing , I didn't notice if the Montana has a 2 speed pto.

Tom

btw where did you buy your Montana , I'm in west central Arkansas. Have you been happy with service etc. I've actually talked to a Tym dealer somewhere south of Tulsa, seemed to be knowledgable and have good prices.

Yes the T7074 has the 540/1000 PTO.
If you are trying to compare this tractor to a 43hp kubota it is way different. With the Montana you get a 70hp tractor/60hp PTO more than likely a higher lift capacity and overall size. For the money and warrenty you get quite a machine.
If I had the money at the time I purchased my 4340C I would have got the 7074.
If you are looking for something similar to the 43hp Kubota. Look at the 4340C, 4940C. These are nice tractors as well They are eventually going to be replaced by the newer models 4384, 4984, so I am sure you can get a deal on one, I know I did.

Excellent customer service and the best prices of any dealer I have talked to in the area.
The 7074 is a strong tractor. We have been moving round bales, using 15' Rhino batwing brushhog and a 9' Krone disc hay mower with ours.

chh , I did talk to Joe on Monday. I had hoped to travel to Ok. today but I had to work late last night so no go. You're right his price was way better. He also seemed to know his product. I also spoke with Tym dealer ( due west of Tulsa). He had Tym 603cab with power reverser. When I looked at the Montana local, I just started it and revved the engine to pto speed( I didn't actually drive it), kind of dumb I know. My 1995 kubota has a gst transmission , which I thought meant Kubota's version of a shuttle shift. After talking to Joe and reading more on this forum, I realized the Montana/Tym 70 hp cab tractor required stopping and clutching from forward to reverse, and clutching for gear changes. My gst is sure nice for fel work. I'm sure I could learn to live with this , since the bucket on the 7074 is way bigger than my kubota's. I could actually get the bigger tractor cheaper than the Tym 603.

Tom

On a different note, I talked to another Montana dealer (south Ar) who said he'd seen transmission problems on the 7074. I think he was talking about 1 tractor with repeat problems, and of course he didn't have one to sell.Anyone seen this? I'm not trying to spread bs, I'm just trying to gather all info b4 making an expensive purchase that I can't really even justify.

chh,
How long have you owned your T7074? Have you found the hydraulic controls to your right and back to be awkward, or have they been pretty easy to get used to? Any other noteworthy insight (good OR bad) you have that you could share on owning it?

thomascw,
I actually just joined the site after coming here to research similar buying hesitation over the engine, so it's good to have that answered. I'm replacing my Ford 5610S and have it narrowed down to the T7074 and a used NH TN95DA... leaning ever so slightly toward the Montana for its non-cramped cab, massive (R4) tires for flotation and the great 3-pt lift capacity (4849lbs!?!) for its size.

Would you two be willing to post / PM what price you guys got? Mine seems to be sticking to around $32K, which is making it hard to justify not going with the TN95 with low hours and powershuttle for just a couple thousand more. I'm hoping to be buying the last tractor I'll need, but realize if it's not 'the one', then I'll probably be eating it in resale versus the New Holland too.

Sorry for the lengthiness also - this is just a huge chunk of change to consider. Thanks!

The hydraulic controls seem to be in an odd place, but they have been easy to get used to. We have only had ours for a short time and it has about 100 hrs on it. I got it as a third tractor to use on our ranch and haying operation so my wife would be in a cab with A/C. Mine was a demo and I gave under your 32K quote with a FEL, bucket and hay spike for the loader. I am running Ag tires.

I have a 4940C I like it quite a bit. Works well for what I need it for. I would caution you that the 4940C only has a single speed PTO. To be honest I dont like the way it is set up. You have to be at almost redline to get the 540. I would have been happier with the dual speed PTO. But other than that it is a great tractor. I noticed you were in western central arkansas. There is a montana dealer in Fort Smith
