We killed a 44"' rattlesnake last night in the back yard. We were sleeping with the windows open and I heard it rattling. It was loud enough to wake me. Turns out our cat and the snake were in a face off about 80' from the house. That's why the snake was rattling. Anyway, four of the six shots from my 9mm were hits. My wife was brave enough to walk out there barefoot and hold the flashlight for me. The only down side is my fist shot blew his rattle off so I have no souvenir. The kids slept through the whole thing gun shots and all.

Gary,

Would the cat have been able to handle the snake?

Is she angry with you for spoiling her fun?

Our house cat loves to play snake where you trail a belt around the couch. He really comes to life.

Good thing you killed that sucker being close around your residence like that. Man, I am like Eddie and hate those rattlesnakes. They are evil as far as I'm concerned. I've killed plenty on my land in preparation for Eddie's visit last Spring.:) Haven't seen any around this year except snake tracks. Every time I smooth the dirt road we see a fat "snake track" crossing it, so I know they're still plenty around.

My neighbors keep a pack of cats out in their garage just for snake control, but they are not house cats. They say they haven't seen a snake around for a long time now. The cats are fast enough to avoid being bitten mostly. And they whack the snake eventually killing it. Don't get too attached to those cats though. The coyotes or bobcats end up with them after a while, if the snakes don't get them.

That's what the cat is for - snake, mouse, etc control. She spends her summer nights outside and the winter nights in the shop. Of course, the wife and kids have a different view of our cat. They think she's one of the family.

If it weren't for the cat being ouside that night, I would'nt have had the chance to kill it myself.
