Just a note on using a cultipacker on the new lawn. It will be a bumpy finished product. Ask me how I know.

I remember that post of yours about the bumpy lawn. If I had a small cultipacker to use after tilling, I'd probably still drag the flexible harrow over the soil just before seeding. That seems to get the finish just right, immediately before the seed goes down.

Cultipackers are used to firm a seedbed after tillage. They will, to a limited degree, break clods and level the seedbed. Certain crops do best when seeded in a firm bed. Soybeans and grass's come to mind. Often, cultipackers were pulled behind a disc. When seeding grass into tilled soil, it's best to cultipack AFTER seeding. That firms the soil and will press the seed into the soil for better contact.

I found a listing for a cultipacker in the Farmer's Exchange. I drove two hours to get this one today before I was beat out again. These things seem to go fast if you can find one. After I saw it, I almost changed my mind, but here is what I bought. JC

I picked up this 9-ft single axle cultipacker a few months ago--$600. These things are popular, fairly expensive now and hard to find locally in the 5-10 ft wide size. The jumbo cultipackers (15+ft wide) show up pretty regularly at the local auctions. With only 10 acres that 9-footer is fine.

Another part of what they do is help with moisture retention and erosion by creating ridges and valleys. Great for larger fields, not so great for a yard.

I have a Land Pride primary seeder that I use for seeding lawns and it has two sets of cultipacker wheels and does a very good job of seeding and keeping the lawn smooth. The small ridges that are left smooth will smooh out when it is watered.
