Heli coil kits??

Like Sandlot posted,why not use an oversized self-tapping drainplug?Some are even available in a second oversize.If you're really paranoid,install the plug,remove and flush with oil,reinstall-good to go.

I think they just want to do it the hard way. SimS has a good idea too, the rubber plug type works like a boat drain or thermos bottle plug. Stick it in and tighten the wing nut causing the rubber plug to expand. Oh well!

Actually, we want to do it so we do not have to replace the pan, and if we do not have to drop it, the better. It is aluminum and expensive, so we are open to ideas.

The oversized self tapping drain plugs are made to do just that. Just screw it in. Pull it out, run a couple quarts of oil thru it to flush, put it back in, fill to normal level. Done!

In the mid 80 I worked on the VW rally cars for the factory US team and then race VW Golfs my self in the national rally series. I know these car inside and out Throw the ALUM pan away. and Buy a steel one about
75 or 100 new and can get at a import parts store no problem. Those pans would split at the drain plug hole if you over tighen them and if it is strip it has been over tighened most likely it will save you big head aches and they are easy to change on your back or a lift 10mm a 6 inch ext a swivel joint and a 1/4 inch ratcht that it. But do they make a metal pan for it? Why did they use aluminum??

All the 8 and 16 valve pans are the same. They put al pans on the car to cool the oil, The G60 cars and some of the turbo cars had them.One thing with VW'S just about every thing in motor and tran fittment are interchangeable Just look and see if the pan gasket is the same and it is a go Chris Putzier

I would insert it with a liberal dose of blue sealing, threadlocking locktite gel.I would grease the tap prior to tapping the thread insert helicoil hole and back it out often.I would start the tap, and stop, and look and check for true, and make my BIL check for true, and get out from underneath and go back and check that I was true before committing.

Thanks all. Sorry for the delay. We ended up pulling the pan, and did the repair in the hous!! All good to go.
