Wood Stove Fan?

Coachgrd,

I got mine from the Vermont Wood stove dealer - pricey. It looks like a computer fan - 110. In fact a friend gave me a computer fan and I wired a plug on the end and it works as well but cost Zero.

Just looked at it - no label. Google it. Also, I think I say them at Home Depot....

Hope this helps...

Lloyd, Princess Auto usually has a goodly supply of inexpensive fans on hand.:D

After reading Moss's new stove thread--I am wondering if any of you dedicated woodstovers are using one of the "self" powered wood stove fans? Ecofan and HeatWave are the two that I have seen--they run around $100 and $180 respectively and are said to be powered by the heat of the stove--more heat they run faster. Comments?

Good Mornin B8FISH,
Years ago I pirated a 5" muffin fan out of a piece of electronics equipment that was being thrown out at work. To this day that fan is still runnin strong ! ;) I have my woodstove in the basement and the fan is mounted about a foot from the ceiling on the back side of the stove and blowing the heated air towards the stairs going to the first floor, IMO it works quite well and cost nothing ! :)

I have seen the fans you are refering to and kind of felt like others that it was more of a novelty and expensive toy than anything else, but of course im a bit thrifty ! ;)

We also have an Ecofan. It lasted just over a year , just out of their warrany period:mad:. Even when it worked, it didn't move a noticable amount of air. Really...... it was more noventy than functional. It would be nice to have one similar that actually worked, since i don't have an electrical outlet close to my stove.

Caframo makes the "Ecofan" fans a few miles from where I live. They are really interesting to watch in action but are over priced in my opinion. I would use a small electric fan.

We had ours for a few seasons before it quit. I called looking for replacement parts, gave them my serial number, and VOILA!, they are shipping the motor for free! They extend the warranty on the fans since they are only used seasonally.

Great product support!

Well ... my wife saw these and wanted one. She is a 'coupon' type of gal and was quite attracted to the get-something-for-nothing concept. Needless to say, it's in the house now.

So that I don't feel it's a worthless piece of $145 'stuff,' I like to play with it while it's running. I get up and point it in one direction or the other while she is watching just so she knows I am interested and engaged. But I'll swear you can put your hand 2" from those fast-moving blades and you will not feel a thing.

Peace and harmony in the family is worth $145 easy!

I've been in the fan and blower business (design and application) for 43 years and can tell you these (Ecofan) are just an interesting "toy".
Yes, I have one (I'm a fan man) but all it does is get in the way of any cooking activities on our wood cook stove.:licking:
For me it is just a visual "how hot is the stove" indicator, goes like **** at 600F!:cool2:
