Maybe the sheriff has been doing this job to long and lost the drive or forgot the reason he got into Law Enforcement. Serve and Protect.

Serve and protect who? The few people breaking the law (i.e. no permits) and blocking traffic and creating a hazard for all the other motorists on the highway. Or is the sherriff's job to serve and protect all the other people on the highway expecting a clear and safe passage.

I don't know how many people travel this particular stretch of highway, but I can bet in 9 hours it's more than the handfull that were affected by the house being tipped over.

This story is very sad. But, Once the Mobil home was on the road, I don't believe it could have reasonably ended, any other way.

Having worked on a few mobile homes, they are generally not strong structurally, and not designed to have forces applied all over them.

I believe that once this unit, which was no doubt over the rated weight for the wheels and hitch due to the fact that it contained all their belongings, was not strong enough to be saved, once it broke down.

Only a monumental effort, that would likely have exceed the cost of the unit, could have saved it. And, apparently shutting down the highway for days was not an option anyway.

This theory is supported by the fact that all attempts to move it, resulted in additional damage. The Sheriff's statement that if he did it over, he would have done it sooner, is a result of this revelation.

How does the insurance company handle this? Homeowners vs Motor vehicle. I wonder if they can reclaim anything if they had insurance...

You are very correct.

Makes me think of the trailer and load stuck under an over pass. Youngster was watching what was going with all the wreckers and ask the policeman what had happened. When he heard he ask, did they let the air out the tires?

Too often the urgency prevents our normal rational thinking. No doubt the move was not legal nor wise. Yet it took place. No doubt good logical minds could have solved it but the urgency pushed logic aside. Had they known up front they would have had 9 hours to move it, no doubt they could have relaxed and gotten it done. But all is speculation from here.

I wonder about the tractors they use to tip it; did they have R1 or R4 tires? What tire type would be best for tipping trailers?

I'm sorry but that story is really funny...

They will probably rebuild it with a little duct tape.

Bird is right on with this. More patience than most.
Around here people get very upset if a train blocks a roadway for 5 min. ...
And a moving train is allowed to block roads.
It pays to plan and always consider what if...

Ray, the first "broke" one I ever saw was in Canada on the Alaska Highway in 1972. Back then, that road was still unpaved and got pretty rough in some places, but they did move mobile homes to Alaska up that road. But we came upon a single wide mobile home with the "box" or house part broken in two right over the rear axle, then the frame had bent down so the back end of that mobile home was dragging on the ground.
