Wayne County Hose, no apology necessary. I understand. I learned a lot about belt factories just by attending one tournament. I may have thought the same way as you did about me. Guess we have high standards for such things here.
The "Switch" Prokop is talking about is what my instructors called automatic action also known as instinct. It's like when something flies toward your face you automatically duck. Another example is loud noises causes one to blink. In martal arts training you learn to read your oponent and automatically block and evade then counter attack. The counter attack is different in every situation but after many years of training it will come to you faster then one may think. Like the blink. Very quick. And yes, can also be deadly if necessary.
Although joint manipulation and bone breaking is easier than one might think, a trained martial artist can take them right up to the point of breakage to "convince one to retreat" without causing any damage and get away without being sued. It's called control. You can get a "feel" for it. The one in submission gets to "feel" it too

Maybe. Nobody here really knows me so I guess it still is huh? Unless you hack into my server, see where my access is coming from. But I could be hijacking one of my neighbors wifi routers so... I wouldn't waste my time if I were you
. All kidding aside the answer is really yes and no. I think personally the less that know the better. Gives me an advantage over an attacker. However the more people that has a concealed weapon (legally), and it's advertised by statistics the better. Then criminals know their job is more dangerous. Makes them look for honest work. Or at least less dangerous. Not all but the ones with half a conscience.

How many of you gun guys are NRA members? If not, what the problem? The NRA is guilty of sending too much junk mail but beyond that they are a great voice for our 2A rights.
Today about 4 million belong to the NRA, imagine if the NRA suddenly rep'ed 8 to 10 Million gun owners. That's a powerfull voice supporting our 2A rights.

Yeah, I know that area well. We were house hunting there 2001 and 2002 but couldn't find anything in our price range. Really pretty up there.

When I was 19 or 20 I knew three guys that had carry permits. All three of them were loners with chips on their shoulders. Personally, they were creepy dudes that made me uneasy. And... they were constantly boasting of being NRA members.
I guess that impression stuck with me for a long time. Lots of NRA members strike me on the gun issues the same way PETA people do on animal issues... they both gots their agendas to the point of being fanatical! Of course, not all, and probably not most, NRA members are whacko loners with chips on their shoulders.... are they?

David, all during my years in law enforcement, there was no such thing as a permit in Texas. To carry a handgun, concealed or not, was illegal unless you were law enforcement or military. Naturally, there were some exceptions, such as "traveling", going to or from a shooting range or repair facility, etc. Of course in recruit school, they said if we caught anyone off his own property (or place of employment) with a handgun, for us to just put him in jail and let him prove he met one of the exceptions.

Wow bird, that does not sound like what Texas stands for, at least in my mind, wasn't it that cafeteria shooting that changed those laws?

I do not know how long carry permits have been available in Indiana. The time period I am referring to is the early 80s, so they were required since then.
My dad used to carry his 45 in the car when we traveled out of town during the late 60's. I found that out late one night. We were returning from a HS football game and some guy really put the scare into us. Without going into detail, my dad put the scare back in him and we made it home safely.
But I know he had no carry permit for that. It used to be a misdemeanor to get caught carrying without a permit. I'm not sure what the penalty is now.

JB, the Texas Penal Code was completely rewritten effective the first of 1974. Prior to that time, the laws under which we lived were written about a hundred years earlier. I don't still have a copy of the old penal code, but the law that prohibited the carrying of handguns read in part "whoever shall carry on or about his person, saddlebags, or portfolio any pistol, dirk, dagger, sling shot" and went on to name the prohibited weapons. One of the exceptions was that you could carry one if you were "traveling". Now the penal code didn't define traveling, so the courts "interpreted" that. There was a time when they courts said you were "traveling" if you crossed a county line, then later as transportation evolved, they changed the interpretation to be if you were going to be away from home overnight. There was one case in which a guy from Dallas traveled to Austin, checked into a motel, but then that night got arrested carrying his pistol. He claimed the traveling exception, but the appeals court rejected that argument; said he was OK traveling from Dallas to Austin with the pistol on his person, but once he checked into the motel, he quit traveling and should have left the pistol in his room until he checked out. Life can get complicated at times.
And JB, I've forgotten the dates of some of the changes. I know the permit system didn't start until sometime after I retired from the police department in 1989. The newest change is that you can now carry a concealed handgun in your vehicle, car, pickup, etc. in Texas without a permit. Theoretically, it's an effort to discourage carjackings.
