How Many Mow Their Leaves

I just mowed a bunch more of my leaves again tonight. I got about a cubic yard of them judging from how full my dump cart was. I dumped them on my failed compost pile that I am now going to modify to include more moisture so that it will work.

That was just from the front yard. I have about the same area to mow in the back yard, but dark and dinner time came about the same time, so I'm done for the night.

We've had a few nights in a row now with some pretty stiff winds. There aren't many leaves left on the trees. So, I should be done mowing leaves for the season.

Dang forgot the leafs!!!!

I started a compose "of sorts" pile this spring. Dirt, thatch material, and horse manure to start. Watered and covered with black tarp. Added vegetable scraps, egg shells, coffee grinds as time went on. Turned over 1/2 dozen times this summer. Removed some and mixed with horse manure again. Great stuff for getting grass growing the bare patches.

I have another compose pile that has juniper leafs in it and has decomposed well over 2 years. I built the pile in the woods and never turned it.

I have a cousin who burned up his freshly restored 1986 Mustang GT at a wedding reception no less. He had parked it in a space that collected leaves. He says they weren't there when he parked there, but nobody believes him. It was to close of a spot and I think he wanted to show off his ride. Anyway it sure got everyone attention! Too bad, it was a really nice looking car.

I use a rear discharge JD Prina 44" 6 blade mower on my JD-345 works real well.

Well this year the mower deck broke, so I had to sweep wet leaves as they lay on the lawn without running them thru the mower first. MUCH MUCH harder to do it that way. I had over 75 sweeper loads at the curb and the job normally takes me 2 hours to do ended up taking me about 5 hours to do with poorer results.

Wow I'm surprised almost everyone responded mow the leaves, I have many trees and have a walk behind blower, I try to blow them off the grass before mowing, after they're chopped up it's much more difficult to blow them.

I mulch my leaves and they just rot into the lawn - all the better for the lawn.

I have a good slope on a fairly long driveway. If I don't get rid of the leaves it becomes hazardous when they are wet. I decided to mow them with my ZTR. They were wet at the time, and I made 2 passes on either side to blow them off into the "woods". I was so inspired I did the whole rest of the property. It worked quite well, although I do have some banks of leaf mulch around the trees, and along the stone walls. Also the one drawback to doing the crushed stone driveway when it was wet, was some of the crushed stone was picked up. It was just enough to sandblast the blades and mower deck. The advantage is that the wet much seems to have reaally stayed put, even in high winds! I was contimplating a clam shell driveway, but suspect it would get picked up by the mower more. I think I'll get more crushed stone. Brian
