see, we have a lot in common!:D i have a taurus 9mm also......first gun i bought myself when i first got married to be an all around home defense weapon........

i'd like to have a 1911....grandpa has a really unique one from WWII that has a mirrored finish on it.........love the way 1911s feel in your hand......

Great minds think alike. :D On another forum I check out from time to time, the Taurus takes quite a beating, but I like the one I have, and have put a few hundreds rounds through it without a single problem. I also like the idea that it has a 17+1 magazine.

The 1911 that I have was issued to my Grandfather who was a balloonist in WW1. He then gave it to my father, who passed it along to me a couple years ago. I've put a few rounds through it just for fun, but am more likely to take the Taurus to the range, since 9mm ammo is a lot cheaper than .45 ACP.

My 1911 is missing the front site, and so far I haven't had any luck finding an original style replacement. But I keep looking and asking....

to the rest, what is the deal with glocks? i really don't know anything about them but the guys that do have them talk a lot.......kind of like the guys with john deeres!;):D

Geez, now you've done it. Picked on both ugly guns and ugly tractors all in the same post.:D

True, however the Glock is one of the few sidearms that you must pull the trigger before you break it down.
QUOTE]

I have a simple solution, when ever I handle my Glock I can tell by looking at the trigger, I mostly carry it without a round in the chamber since sometimes I have to put it under my seat or on a shelf for short periods of time and don't want it being able to be fired with just a trigger pull if some inexperienced hands get on it.

So when ever I check the chamber, taking it out of the safe or putting it back, cleaning/inspection or what ever, I drop the hammer (so to speak) (in a safe direction) then insert a mag this way I know with a quick visual or feel if there's a round in the chamber or not, with the trigger depressed there's no guessing. Trigger's loaded, chamber's loaded or at min treated as if it's loaded.

or at min treated as if it's loaded

That is what you should do with every firearm, not just a Glock.

For myself, anytime I clean my Glock, I take the mag out, rack the slide and discharge the chambered round (always carry and store it loaded), then rack the slide again and visually inspect that no round is in the firearm (while mag is out), let slide go, and pull slide back a second time to visually verify that there is no round in the chamber, then point firearm in a safe direction, and then pull the trigger to begin the take down process. Funny enough, I've never had a negligent discharge following those procedures. Knock on wood.

What do you know, checking on my e-mail and look what pops up. Look like someone else has had a negligent discharge, although from the news report, doesn't look like he was cleaning his weapon (no mention on the model). Considering the man in question does not have a N.Y carry permit, I wonder if they're going to throw the book at him like they would some other poor sonofagun who isn't as famous.

Regarding the article linked in the last post, didn't read the whole thing but would guess it was a "locked and loaded" SA, there have been at least 3 such incidents that I know of in our small town, one was a cop and one worked in a gun store, all got a large caliber extra hole in their butts
I've got a 1911 and have never once carried it like that, IMO the only safe way to carry like that is with a service type holster, not a concealed carry.

If you always carry and store your Glock loaded then there should never be a question in your mind and would be unlikely for you to have an unintended discharge. For me I carry both ways so when ever I rack the slide with no mag I automatically dry fire it leaving the trigger fully rearward letting me know what the status of the chamber is.

When I was a kid in Minnesota we lived an hour from the minneapolis suburbs. In the 80's there was a group of people coming up and going around looking for easy targets, they would drive up kick the door in and run, no reaction and they would empty the house and move on. I do no remember the rest of the details, but it didn't last long.

I now live in the last frontier and have the same thing can happen. But with grizzly bears. We have a right to carry state, no permit required. But they recommend you get one to let the cops know who the good guy is. whatever the heck that means.

In my room there are several weapons, but kids are also in the house. I have a 12 gauge available. Loaded with 00 buck, NOTHING in the chamber. I also have slugs at the ready and 2 dogs. If a 2 legged intruder is the problem i am loaded for the issue. 4 legged intruders require an ammo change. You can tell witch one has me more worried.

My wife understands the use and function of the gun and is under orders to hunker down, jack a round in a call the calvary. She has been told to inform them she is armed and that she fears for her life. Important, if you call 911 tell them you are afraid for your life.

For our trips into the great outdoors, the 12 gauge stays in the camper and the Taurus 44 mag SS with 4 inch barrel goes on the shoulder holster. I purchased this weapon just for traveling the back country and dealing with bears. It is fun to shoot, not to expensive and I have no concerns about it being wet, dirt or worse. This piece of Iron has traveled to half the outhouses in the area in the middle of the night. A gun you can comfortable carry is very handy. My 338 is to much, and to hard to reach while traveling by 4 wheeler.

For in town I have a 45 auto and my wife has a 9mm and 380. both of witch see enjoys to shoot.

My kids are a big part of the story. I believe the loaded guns are impossable for them to reach, yet I have taken steps to eliminate a loaded weapon if and when the do reach them. My teenage daughter has been shown how to shoot, enjoys it and happens to be good at it. she also know gun safety and not to touch or talk about my guns with out me or her mom.

Please, every person who believes that we have a right to own firearms, teach your kids the fun of plinking or shooting or something, AND TAKE ANOTHER KID ALSO. we need to show kids that do not have guns in their life what shooting and gun owner ship is about. Pass it on or lose it guys.

If you are going to have a gun for home defense, take it out and shoot it, witch is the fun part anyway. be familiar with it and be comfortable carrying it. when the time come it will show.

And for those that may wonder, after 14 bear contacts 3 years ago in one summer, I quit counting. I did fire 3 shoots, never at the bear.

One bear and 4 moose contacts at home and no shoots fired, at and animal any way.

most times one round in the air will solve the problem.

Okay, true story, a guy here at work was teaching his son gun safety and wanted to demonstrate how an auto would not go off if you pushed back on the end of the barrel. He proceeded to push his 45 1911 into his wrist and pulled the trigger. The round went through his wrist, the kitchen wall and lodged into the next wall. You talk about a lucky SOB, the round missed every thing but soft tissue and did not hit anyone else. This guy is a scoutmaster and every two years or so I have him tell me the story and I just about die trying not to laugh. His son just graduated H.S. and he gave him the pistol.

Bake

He must have seen one of those guns tht does have a point blank safety.. unfortunately.. his wasn't one of them!

I don't have one, but recently saw a few used in what looked like excellent condition, but the timing wasn't right for me to pick one up.
