Gun Safe?

Does anyone keep a gun safe in the garage? My wife won't let me bring one inside. I could probably hide one in the garage behind some stuff (junk). What do you use to compensate for humidity? JC

You need to have a talk with the wife. IMHO you making a mistake putting them in the garage.

"Hold on Mr. Robber, I have to get something in the gargage...be right back"

Yeah, I don't see that working out too well.

Who's the boss in your house? :)

I think the word you want is desiccant.

A bag of decadent stuff would probably be really good chocolate, gold jewelry, etc...

Come to think of it, the safe would be a good place for your decadent stuff, too! :D

Yea spell check sabotaged me on that one, not sure if that was a good suggestion anyway.

I've seen guns stored in the worst conditions and rarely seen any "rust".

Geez. No slack to the guy! :D

You keep the gun safe where it fits best in your home. You don't keep your personal protection locked in the big gun safe. You keep your rifles and shotguns and collectibles, etc... in there. You keep your defense weapons right next to you.

I have 2 safes. One is upstairs in the office, the other in the master bedroom. My wife didn't want it there initially, but it's burgundy and the room furniture is cherry wood, so it "blends". I even put pictures atop it to appease her ;).

I want my safes in the house, not out in the elements. Humiture variance would be brutal on my weapons. I have far too much money vested in them to let them weather, dessicant or not. I have a monitored alarm system with motion sensors and I want my safes protected by that. The alarm doesn't sound if someone lifts off a garage door, or cuts through it and loads them up.

Hey I put the smiley in to ease the pain!

I agree you keep your good stuff locked up in the big gun safe, heck it's one of my prettist office furnishings...way too pretty to end up in the garage collecting dust.

Podunkadunk,
The safe in your second picture isn't working, guns must not fit in it, hehe. Nice weapons and nice safes.

I vote for inside as well.

Inside.

What exactly are her objections? (try to resolve them)

Peronsallly way to easy for joe schmo to back his tommy lift gated pickup through your tin can garage door, walk the safe on the tommy lift and drive out in under a min.

you wont get the safe out of the house, down the hall, down the stairs, around the bend (you get the point) in under a min.

We have the garage doors monitored as well as the home. Heck, in the old house in the bad neighborhood I even ran a circuit to my daughter's Little Tykes playhouse in the back yard!

I ran a simple loop with disconnects through a hole drilled in the wall so if someone would try to make off with it, the disconnects would pop and the alarm would go off! :D

I have a Fortress Model 3060 27 gun safe made by Heritage kinda like the one Podunkadunk has. I bought it at Southern States in Oneonta, Alabama. I purchased the optional dehumidifier to go inside the safe. It wasn't very expensive.

After some mumbling my wife agreed to put it in our bedroom. She hasn't complained much since. She does like the idea of being able to keep any cash or important papers inside the safe instead of in a safety deposit box ($40.00 year) at a bank 10 miles away. She also saves all her pictures to a flash drive and stores them in the safe.

One note on placing the safe in a garage or workshop. Most safe companies advise against this. Do you have a torch, sawsall, or other metal working tools??? If so, thiefs can use them to open the safe.

I was going to put my safe in my workshop until I read this.

Firefighter,
I agree with your reasoning. Same thoughts crossed my mind. The 'average' cat burglar isn't going to try and get into a safe. The only way to do so is like you say...cut in with a torch or a good sawsall. But, this is where my logic comes in regarding the alarm and it being inside my monitored home. If he comes in, the alarm will sound and the sheriff called. It's so loud and "shrilling" it'll almost make you sick to your stomach. He will probably knock the speakers off the wall, but the clock is ticking on the po-po showing up. I don't think he'll want to take the time to try and get in either of them. Maybe I'm wrong...? It seems someone like that is after stuff laying around the house that's quick and easy to fence somewhere, stereo equipment, dvd players, xbox's, tools, everyday jewelry or guns that aren't in the safe.

Also, from a firefighter's point of view, what is protocol for when you guys show up to a burning home and you hear ammo going off inside?
