Howdy all, this summer while mowing my 1610d started overheating,the temp gaug spiked all the way in the red.I lifted the hood and saw that the overflow bottle was full and had overflowed.I checked for water in the oil and oil in the water ,none.also had not noticed no white smoke while mowing.I pulled the rad. and put all new hoses including the one going from the rad. to the overflow bottle.I also put a new fan belt on.I cleaned the fins out,flushed the rad. and block with a garden hose. I thought I had the problem licked.Two weeks ago I ran the tractor hard tilling for a couple of hrs.The temp. gauge never got above the quarter mark,I popped the hood and saw the overflow bottle was full.I waited to see if it would suck back to the rad. but it didn't.Again checked for oil in water and water in oil and again nothing.I also put a new rad. cap on, the manuel calls for 13lbs. Thanksgiving my brothers were giving me some thoughts,I hadn't drove the tractor or done anything to it since tilling so the rad was low enough on fluid where you could'nt see it and the overflow bottle was still all the way full.I left the rad cap off and started it up and could see circulatoin in the rad.I could see bubbles in the overflow bottle.I should also say that the 1610d doesn't have a thermostat , it does have a waterpump which seems to be working due to the circulation i saw.One brother said don't worry about it because the temp. gauge stays in the normal range,the other brother said there should be some kinda bleeder valve to get the air out of the rad.This problem is bugging the heck outta me and I sure would appreciate any thoughts and help.

No Water in the oil doesn't always rule out a blown head gasket. You can buy a presure test kit at any autoparts store that will check the cooling system

Put a new head gasket on . that is where the air is coming from. And that is why it is getting hot.

I fought this myself on my 1610D summer before last. Not sure what to tell you but here is what I found on mine.

1st the head was slightly warped and needed to be surfaced and rebuilt. Remember if it is the original its been in place for 20 some odd years and who knows what was done to the tractor in that time. This helped the situation but I still had the over flow issue as you described from time to time, mainly when brush hogging. I completely flushed the system a few times before pulling the head. I never did take the radiator in to be rodded out but did flush it several times as well as flushing the block. The radiator by the way on mine looks rather clean inside for its age.

2nd I replaced the water pump this was more of a wanted to do than needed to do I guess. But it did end the over flow issue and I have had other no problems with that since then. I ran it all the past summer mowing and clearing and had none of the overheating/over flowing issues. I think the seal might have been out in the water pump and was sucking air into the system but I guess I will never know for certain. Also make sure you don't over fill the system. I believe I was trying to keep it to full for a time, it seems to work best if you leave it mid way between the low and high marks. I have a honda 4 wheeler that is like that as well and that is what made me try it on the Yanmar. The Honda dealer told me to never fill it above half way on the over flow bottle.

Other that keeping chaff and other debris out of the fins of the radiator I am not sure what else I can say to help you. Doing the actual work on the engine is not that hard and it only takes basic tools and knowledge. Hoye sells a manual that was helpful to me.

thanks Kenmac,Gizmo36 and Box. man Box I was looking hard at that pump when I had the rad off but I didn't replace it,now I think I will and also get the head rebuilt . while I got it tore down I think I'll get the rad. cored. thanks again guys

You might also want to buy the bolts that mount the water pump. I had a couple that where too far gone to reuse. I got lucky and found some the same size and lenght at an auto parts store but I had to go to 2 different ones to get enough. The are odd lengths is what I remember.

I got my pump off of ebay. I forget the seller's name but it was a good deal so I ordered it from them.

Another good water pump option is to have them rebuilt. I ups'd mine out on monday and had it back rebuilt like new on friday. Great job.

phatgemi.whered you send it to get rebuilt? also I was wondering if prehaps my overfil bottle is stock,it's a square kinda job,from what I can tell looking at my service manual at the 226d it looks round.

Mine is also sort of sqaure/rectangle in shape.
