Gun Safe?

I'm sorry for your loss. Glad all of you are ok.

I have a 30 gun model in my unheated/uncooled shop. It has a golden rod dehumidifier in it and I've never had a problem.

I use the safe frequently and check that the goldenrod is working. I'm not compulsive about gun oiling, but I probably wipe down the "safe queens" about 2x a year with either CorrosionX, Breakfree, Remoil or military medium weapons oil. The guns I use get oiled more frequently.

Most high dollar safes are capable of withstanding homefires without cooking off ammo inside. Anyhow, the question really isn't pertinent to me anymore, not since I sold off everything firearm related and donated to the mission. I had always wondered though and saw that he was a firefighter, figured I'd throw it out there.

Ah, so you remembered. Man, the first Blue Moon I ever had was up in Indiana when I was with you, hard to believe that was April of '07 already! Not long after returning from that business trip, they started selling it here. It's good stuff, I have a couple every now and then, mainly with a steak. Good stuff indeed.

Does anyone keep a gun safe in the garage? My wife won't let me bring one inside. I could probably hide one in the garage behind some stuff (junk). What do you use to compensate for humidity? JC

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable keeping a safe in an unconditioned space, but apparently people here have and don't seem to have an issue.

A little trick I learned a long time ago if you're not sure about mositure issues inside your safe

Take a cup off surgar and place it in the safe. After a period of time, check on the sugar. If the sugar has clumps in it, chances are you have some moisture issues. If the sugar looks normal and no clumps, little or no problems in the safe. I actually found this meathod more useful than those old "humidity strips" where I couldn't tell if it was blue or pink:confused:

I've got to ask though, why won't the wife allow a safe somewhere in the house? Does she allow firearms in the house? When you mentioned that you may have to "hide the safe" in the garage, there may be bigger issues laying ahead of you.

I have a pine gun cabinet in our bedroom. I don't have room for anything much bigger, We live in a small house (1150 sf). Nice safe, if I could afford one, is not permitted in the living room. Cheap safe that is not pretty is not allowed in bedroom. Garage is not tidy and I could keep a safe hid in there. I only have 4 shotguns and two rifles at this time, plus 5 handguns. I would also like to keep my small collection of silver coins locked up.

I can't really buy a safe at this time anyway, I'm hoping to start a new job next month, since I will be loosing current job in three months. I just wanted opinions on the garage, and I got some. Thanks, JC

JC,
You got our opinions and that's just what they are...our opinions! Nothing is gospel. In your situation, put that new safe out in your garage. Keep the hinges/bolts slightly lubed, get a combo lock version instead of a keypad version. Reason being the battery draining from extreme temp's in the cold area. I googled where you live, it gets cold here in LA, I know it gets colder there. Cold temps wreak havoc on battery life. Get a combo style...they are a little cheaper too, but you'll be happy with it, I guarantee!
Place a rubber mat under the safe, between the safe's bottom and the concrete. This will provide a moisture barrier and prevent corrosion. Sliding a safe on concrete floor will remove paint/primer and allow the moisture to collect, resulting in corrosion happening that you won't be able to see for many, many years.

Sounds like you have a nice collection started. I wish you lots of luck in adding to it. Good luck with the new job, God Bless.

If you ever find yourself heading to lower 'Bama on the eastern side, tri-state area, shoot me a pm first, I'll give you my contact numbers, we'll hook up for a cup of coffee.

Lastly, Roll Tide! Although an FSU fan first, I love 'Bama and Auburn. I despise UF as you can imagine. I wish the boys all the best this weekend against the gaytors. They'll need it.

And hopefully the best team wins, (which will be the Gators!!)

I am getting more and more runs over to Alabama these days, but usually find out about them the evening before. Not much time to plan out a meeting...

It looked good. My friends up here like it too. I may have to break down and buy one for my wife so I can have a sip or two. (pretty sad state of affairs, huh? :D )
