What weight engine oil should I use in my YM1500? Also will an off the shelf oil filter from WalMart fit, or do I need to order something special.

I ran 30wt in my 1500 for 5 years. It was hard to start when it got cold in Georgia. I change oil last week and put 15 w 40 in it. I'm hoping it will start better while its cold.

I run a Napa 1344 , its what was on my 1500 when I bought it .
OIL I am useing Travellor Brand straight 30W Deisel formula from Tractor Supply,
but I live in central coast of CA. and it rarely gets colder than 20+ degrees in winter .

About equal distance north of St Paul and east of St Cloud ?
45 34.4 N - - gee, more than half way to the North Pole.
Well now, does it ever get COLD there ?

Yes, off the shelf DIESEL RATED oil such Shell Rotella T and Fram filter will fit and work well.
I'm generally not a believer in wide viscosity range oils, but I think you should go down to a 15W oil for winter, Rotella is 15W/40.

Yep, it gets cold here. -40 sometimes. I have an in-line heater on my tractor and keep it in the shop, so hopefully I'll get it started even in the cold. I just got it so we'll see. I will run 15w like you and others suggest. Short of taking the messy filter with me to compare to every filter in the store, what would be the best way to find out which Fram filter fits?

Thanks!
Jeff

I guess the stock answer would be to go to Fram and/or Yanmar web site(s) and search there ?

I found this list somewhere on the web a while back. I can't vouch for the accuracy or whether the non-Yanmar part numbers meet Yanmar specs. FWIW, I know the Fram part fits.

Oil Filter: Yanmar 119660-35150
Fram - PH3593A
WIX - 51334
Purolator - L14459
AC Delco - PF1230

And the 1064 oil filter is similar to 1334. (Wix and the Wix filters at NAPA have a 5 prefix ahead of these generic numbers). 1064 is physically smaller.

I finally switched from 1334 to 1064. Since it is smaller it seems to get the oil light off sooner on a cold start. (Cranking with the compression relieved before actually starting).

One (both?) of these fits nearly all Hondas so they are available everywhere.

That AC Delco # hasn't been made for 10? years. There was one on my Yanmar when I bought it in 2003. I think the old AC crossover list showed this as their correct filter. The only place I've seen them sold is NOS case lots on ebay.

While the oil and fuel filter numbers cross to NAPA numbers, the air filter is unique and there isn't any correct will-fit in the world of US auto parts. You should get the air cleaner from one of the Yanmar-specific dealers who posts in this forum.
