Anyone have plans or ideas for an easy shooting backstop? I can't afford a new gun, but I have stocked up on handgun ammo. I need to get some practice, its been about 5 years since I have done any shooting. More cows have moved in since then, and the big hill I did use, has been leveled. JC

Before I sold all my weapons, I used to have a piece of 1/4" thick steel on a 45 degree angle welded to angle iron. I would hang the targets so the bullet would hit the plate and ricochet into sand.

The range backstop is not much more than a pile a dirt. (an outside one)

I currently use stacked RR ties in front of a dirt pile.
in the past I've used the angled steel plate as well.

I used the FEL to dig out level spot on the side of a hill.. I then put bags of sand (Lowes) in sandbags (Farmers Coop) as an additional backstop - about 4 rows high..

Thanks been looking for something like that too.
Why would the DOE have that?

DOE is responsible for civilian nuclear security. They also do nuclear weapons. Some of their employees and contractors have a serious need for frequent firearms training, which requires firing ranges.

What caliber handgun are you going to use? It makes a difference in the needed backstop.
I do a bit of accuracy shooting with an air rifle and with the range, if pointed in the air, of about 1000 ft I can let distance be my backstop. Hey don't laugh, I regularly shoot five shoot groups in less than a third of an inch (center to center) at 43 yards. And with a machine rest I can shoot twenty-five shot groups at 51 yards that I can cover with a dime.
